2004 ION-3 Sedan
Cool Tire and Rim Sizes?

Right now I have the factory 16 inch aluminum rims with 205/55-16 that I am installing a set of winter tires onto and looking for some 17 inch rims for next summer. I was wondering for those with 17's how is the ride quality cause I don't want it to be too stiff or bumpy and plan on replacing the struts as well but just with some basic ones. The set of rims I found has 215/40-17 tires which 2 are real good and the other 2 will need to be replaced. For the 2 new tires I was debating on going with 215/45-17 or 205/50-17. Maybe I will just replace all 4 and try to sell the 2 good ones but am not sure yet.

What are your thoughts and experiences with this and any pics with the size tires you have. Ideally, with factory height suspension.

Thanks!

Default 205/50-17 or 215/45-17?

Given my factory size was 205/50-16 which is 24.9 inches tall if I go to 205/50-17 it would be 25.1 so slightly taller and have a fair sized side wall otherwise a 215/45-17 would be 24.6 so just barely shorter but also wider. I am getting new struts since I think the ones on the car might be the original set so the ride should be better with those so a firmer side wall should not really change the ride too much. I wanted to get any feedback from people that run 17's to see what size tires you went with and how you liked them or if there are any fitment issues with a wider tire. Also these will be just summer tires since I just had some Blizzak tires put on the aluminum factory rims.
Thanks!

Default Re: Tire and Rim Sizes?

Im running 205/50/17 inch Bridgestone Turenza's and the ride quality is great on my 2004 Ion. No clearence issues at all. I will mention that I had KYB shocks put on and lowerd my car 1.5 inches on Tein springs. Rides and handles awsome. If I do hit a hard bump or uneven surface in road due to construction I can tell that the lower profile tire transmitts the shock energy to the cab pertty good, however deffently not enough for me to re-consider putting factory sizes back on. Plus I like the looks of my aftermarket wheels wayyyyyy better.

Thanks for the reply! That size is closer to the factory but I still would like to see if anyone is running the wider 215/50-17. I know there is a limit on how wide you can really go but I just love the grip and stability a nice wide flat tire can give. Do you have any pics of your car with it being lowered and the 17 inch rims? I am wondering how much it fills in the wheel well or if there is much room.

Thanks again!
