1998 SL2
Default 2003 Vue with a serious vibration

I first thought the problem was bad tires. I have just bought the vue and replaced the clutch. I'm not sure what the problem is.

It drives great under 55 over 60 it really starts to vibrate. I have had the wheels balanced and rebalanced. At over 65 it begins to feel like the car is about to come unglued.

HELP ??

It almost feels that there is a lopsided wheel..

The Vue has 104,000 miles as of today..

REWARD EXCELLENCE!

Raise one front wheel at a time (so only one wheel turns).. Support it under the wheels "A" member so the wheel is close to its normal riding height. Run it in gear to see if you can re-produce the vibration...

Careful - I'm think speedometer will read 1/2 speed if one wheel is turning and the other is not. i.e. the raised wheel will be turning at 60 mph even though the speedo reads 30 mph.

A bent rim would have shown up when the wheels were balanced. However, if the hub was mounted with crap behind it, you could get some runout (wobble). You'll see this if you spin the wheel while its raised.

Possibly bent jackshaft or axle, bad wheel bearing, bad jackshaft idler bearing

IMPORTANT

With 100k miles you may be facing possible timing chain issues. I'd inspect the timing chain tensioner. If its the version 1 or 2 style, I'd consider upgrading it to the version #3.

If you decide to do this, DO NOT just simply switch it out. You will want to inspect the chain and take precautions to ensure the chain doesn't jump timing when you make the switch.

^^ If the brake caliper was mounted on the hub and there was rust buildup or other crap between the caliper and the hub, this could cause run-out problems (wobble). You should see the wheel wobble if you spin the wheel.

Hold a straight edge against the fender so it just touches the tire. Spin the tire slowly . the distance between the straight edge and the tire should be the same (run-out)

When this happened on my '03 it turned out to be a bad Brake Hose that didn't let the Caliper release. The dragging Brakes cause heat build-up, warped the Rotor which caused some serious vibration.

+1 for this.

if that is happening, the rim will be hot to touch.
