Default No Camshaft Bearings?

I'm rebuilding the engine in my daughters 07 ION and when I removed the cams I noticed no bearings. Is this common or did someone do a hack job repair?
I also noticed the cams journals and the corresponding cap were slightly gouged. The journals are on the cusp of specs within two or three tenths of a thou of Chiltons specs, the lobes are within 2 thou of each other and in decent shape.

Does anyone have the measurements of the camshaft saddle and cap assembly?
Is there a cam bearing retrofit that is a reliable repair? There are no notches to lock in a bearing. I don't want to junk a working head but also refuse to do a hackassed job. A head swap might be in order.

Presuming all ecotec 2.2L engines are the same, no bearings exist for camshafts. Oil pressure pumped into the oil galleries and clearances allows a thin film of oil to provide lubrication.

'05 camshaft specs;

Camshaft End Play
0.040-0.144 mm/0.0016-0.0057 in

Camshaft Journal Diameter
26.935-26.960 mm/1.0604-1.0614 in

Camshaft Thrust Surface
21.000-21.052 mm/0.8268-0.8252 in

Thanks for the reply, that's what I was thinking too. It kind of makes sense since the cam is rotating mass and doesn't see lateral force like a crank shaft would. I had a GM service manager tell me almost every car manufacturer uses the same design no bearings, I just found it odd.
