2008 Astra XR
Default Immobilizer Key Reading Coil

I accidentally broke mine today working on my command start. Ugh. How pooched am I? Is this part paired to the key?

Default Re: Immobilizer Key Reading Coil

Are you able to startup and drive or not? Previous GM security (Passlock), when faulty would disable itself and allow starting and driving without theft protection. The security light remains ON all the time to indicate Passlock failed and theft protection isn't available. Passkey, if under certain conditions may allow drivers to use their vehicle but have no theft protection. Better to have zero theft protection that allows vehicle use than having security enabled and active, preventing vehicle use until repaired. Which situation are you in?

If you have Passkey (rfid chip in the key), the rfid is the same as EZ-PASS where a transponder (xmitter) excites a coil to generate a discrete (coded) signal for the receiver in the xponder to detect, send the signal to the bcm for security checking. The damaged part is not matched to the key. Every rfid chipped key is discretely coded differently from the other. Family pets are using the same rfid capsule inserted under the skin for identification with a hand held transponder displaying the ID number. Replace the damaged part and you'll probably restore security function.
