2008 VUE 3.6L
Default 14404B trans wave plate – Problems Communicating w GM

I have a 2008 Saturn VUE which recently developed transmission problems. From my research and discussions on various auto repair forums, I learned that my Vue is covered by the above-mentioned 14404 special coverage (transmission clutch wave plate). This warranty is also confirmed on my Onstar account as an existing warranty until Jan 2018/120,000 miles (my mileage is currently 92,000).

On Friday, I spoke to a customer rep/manager at GM. He didn’t seem to know anything at all about the wave plate symptoms/criteria for coverage, and all he was able to do was make an appointment with a dealer who immediately told me that if I still had my reverse gear, I was not covered by the warranty. Is this correct? In other words, does still having a reverse gear invalidate all the other symptoms (e.g. slipping, not shifting, shiny fluid).

On top of that, when pressed for further info, the dealer indicated that the “appointment” would consistent of disassembling my transmission, and I would need to leave my car at the dealership. I then asked, “who’s paying for that?” and was told that if it wasn’t covered by the warranty, I would be paying for it. Of course I cancelled the appointment because I can't afford that kind of job if it's going to be out-of-pocket. On top of that, as I mentioned previously, he earlier told me that "reverse still working" means “not covered,” so what would be the point even if I had the funds?. Any thoughts on this? Is he correct about "reverse not working" being a prerequisite for coverage? Is this the kind of response to expect from GM or did I just have a bad experience with that particular GM rep/dealership?

The extended warranty covers failure of the 3-5-R wave plate which due to improper heat treating fractures. This is a sudden thing, does not happen over time and yes the R in 3-5-R wave plate refers to reverse gear. If you have reverse gear than I suspect the problem is something else. I gave my son our 2008 6 cyl AWD Vue and it failed last summer while he was driving 70 miles per hour, "BANG" and he could barely get off the expressway with it. Happened to be a GM dealer at the bottom of the exit ramp in a rural area of Wisconsin. They knew all about it, could not guarantee him it was the wave plate but said all symptoms pointed to it. They gave him a loaner so they could get home, 150 miles away. Four days later he drove back to pick it up, they handed him the keys with a rebuilt transmission, no charge.

When mine failed, all I got was a check engine light and a P0700 code. Had it towed in to the local GM dealer and they diagnosed it as a e-5-R failure. Only issue is trying to determine who will pay for it. I bought the car on the 12th and it was delivered on the 17th - 10 years ago. When we did the paperwork, the car was still wrapped from shipment and the truck was still in the yard. Took them 5 days to prep and process it. The tranny went out on the 16/17. I have paperwork showing the delivery as the 17. So, waiting on GM senior advisor for AZ to rule on how much it will cost me.

The options I was given was a new tranny at about 4600 or they would rebuild the old one for 4800 as the plate failed, but did not shatter. Going with the new tranny with the 3 year warranty.

What is the confusion, the extended warranty is 10 years, 120,000 miles including subsequent owners. You said you had 92,000 miles on it so mileage is not an issue. Either it is under 10 years old or its not.

For the original poster it should be clear cut. For my situation, it depends on what date they use as I have paperwork showing two different dates - the later of which is the day they actually gave me the keys to the car as the first owner and let me drive it off the lot.
