Default Rebuilding rear calipers - what is this part for?

I spun the piston out, got the dust boot off, the dust book clip and the inner gasket (that goes on the cylinder wall at the top.) Not sure what this piece is for - parking brake maybe? That spring looks like to hell to take off if I have to deal with that.

I've had these two calipers for 20 years. The bleeder valves snapped off and for the life of me I cannot get them out now. I first hit them with PB Blaster, used a screw extractor - which broke off in the hole, tried drilling it out, propane torch. One of them may be beyond salvage - unless I can re-tap the threads somehow - AFTER the stuck piece comes out. It might have to rust in peace. Too bad both calipers are in great condition - piston, cylinder, etc.

My first guess was something to do with the parking brake. And, ...I was right
Maybe...

Nice! Now I wonder how all of that parking brake stuff comes off - without killing myself with that spring.
