Default 4x4 idea? Crazy?

Don't know if this is really the appropriate forum for such a silly idea, but...
Son has a 2007 v6 awd Vue that he has been driving for a couple years.
He will probably move onto a full size truck soon.
The Vue is still decent and reliable.
I had been thinking since we spend some time at Silver Lake Sand Dunes each summer, if the stock awd drive set up could be altered enough to make it capable in the sand.
Last year we did see an awd Ford Edge traveling around on the dunes, so it doesn't have to be fully locked 4 wheel posi trac monster truck to get around, but don't think the current set up would be much fun.
Is there any way, has anyone ever done any mods, to "tighten up" or make the transfer case and/or rear differential more off road capable.
Thought there maybe something could be altered, drilled, tapped, nut and bolted, or welded together...?
Sold our 1975 Bronco a few weeks ago and don't want to be without something to "dune".
Thinking of looking at trying to maybe raise it a little with strut spacers, wheel spacers, and fit some wider bigger tires...
Just curious at this point.
Appreciate any help, especially if anyone has cracked open the drive train and done any knid of mod like that.
THANKS

REWARD EXCELLENCE!

2005 VUE 2.2L
Default Re: 4x4 idea? Crazy?

I think the only resonable thing to do to is to drop the tire inflation pressure down to 10 psi or so.
At an inflation that results in a tire height 75% of normal ,the pressure is low enough to effectively double the tire surface area in contact wth the sand.

Thanks for that.
Even with my old Bronco, have to air down the tires.
I don't think it is going to be much fun as is.
Kind of thinking this would be a budget alternative to getting a 4 seat side by side UTV.
Just pondering admittedly stupid stuff.

Appreciate the reply and response

Any luck ever taking your Vue on the dunes? I just want to putt putt onto the dunes with mine and park it so my kids can see them (and some crazy people wreaking their stuff!).

Never did do any modifications to the Vue.
Still think it would have been a neat project if I could have gotten some more info and been able to dig into it deeper.
Did not want to just open the diffs and transfer case to explore and find out that it wasn't reasonable to lock them up any way.
Sold the Vue a few months ago after the in laws handed down a shop truck Silverado to my son who drove the Vue as his first vehicle.
He is way happier with a full size 4x4 and got a deal too good to pass up.
Like I said though, kind of feel that I could have had a cool project if I would have been able to learn more and if there were cheap and easy ways to modify the Vue.

Since Vues use part time awd, this means the rear drive module decides when to engage rear wheels when traction is lost in the front. You'd have to find technical articles explaining the exact descriptions before entertaining mods. In one way, eliminating the RDM to engage rear wheels full time might be one method as it eliminates the decisions made by the RDM to engage or disengage rear wheels. This makes a modified Vue full time awd........and any issues that presented with idea, if at all doable.

I was thinking more along the lines of mechanically "locking" the transfer case and/ or rear differential. My old school mentality was contemplating welding the spider gears in the rear for a "Lincoln Locker" and was trying to investigate if there were components in the transfer case that could be screwed together of some way to make it 100% engaged all the time.
I know that street usefulness would be next to nothing but this was all along with probably lightening the Vue up by removing doors and tailgate too...

But as I said, opted to sell it and actually turned a tiny profit after the son drove it for a couple years.
Have to admit, my first import vehicle...or close to it I guess; Honda powered.
Pretty impressed with the Saturn.
Held up to a 16 year old driver for his first years.
A few wear and maintenance items. but got him where he was going.

VERY much appreciate all the help I got here too
