Default Hanging Muffler Question

Car is 1998 SL. Last week I backed into a curb and noted a rattle when I would go over bumps. Discovered muffler hanger top dislodged from attachment site. I tried to bend the top of the bracket so I could reinsert tab part into slot on chassis but my hands are not strong enough. Even with a pliers.

I did a low tech bodge job by looping a wire hanger through the slot on chassis and around muffler and it's really quite secure.

Any big downside to sticking with this solution? I am sure I could go to Midas and they would fix it but I expect they would charge me $100 or more.

REWARD EXCELLENCE!

No, probably not, unless you live in a state where they do undercarriage inspections....

In my state, if you have a muffler hole, you can buy those muffler bandage wrap things, but if you do use it, the state will fail the car inspection because of it.

Is rust a problem where you live? those strap thingies tend to rust quickly.

In another thread a member recommended going to your local big box home improvement store. In the heating and cooling department with the duct work you can find stainless steel worm drive hose clamps large enough to go around the muffler. I found a 2 pack for under $4. They are long enough to fit, you will have to trim off the excess. Since I had 2, I put both on. So far so good. Cheap and easy.

Rust is a problem where I live (Pennsylvania). I will ask my regular mechanic to see if he can bend the clamp and hang the muffler properly next time I have the car in. I will plan for the current setup to be temporary.

This happened to me just before Christmas. I found a little "hole in the wall muffler shop" NOT a national brand. In and out in 1/2 hour...$40.00
There is snow and ice everywhere here, so getting under the Car in Winter isn't an option. Best $40. I've spent!
