Default Temp gauge and P0118?

1996 SC2 DOHC with 82K. California car!

Driving home today in traffic and I noticed the temp gauge dropping to full cold then half then back to 1/4. It was erratic and fast changes. Then the computer threw a P0118 code which I reset and it did not come on again for the rest of the ride. I noticed some idle problems and then finally rolled into my garage at home and the radiator fan kicks on, the temp gauge goes erratic to cold and half and back and it revs up and down. Not overheating, just crazy stuff.

The car was new to me and I replaced the ECTS with a brass tipped one from Amazon.com about two months ago.

Could my replacement ECTS have gone bad? I used teflon tape and a in-lb torque wrench to install it. My scan gauge usually says I am running at about 150 degrees, but on way home I was at 125-130 and all over the place down to 100 degrees.

Should I replace with another ECTS? Any recommendations on a better one? When I first replaced ECTS, the temp gauge was between 1/4 and 1/2 now it is just barely above quarter all the time.

Thoughts? Car has been running like a dream until today...

REWARD EXCELLENCE!

I found my past order and installed a "Standard Motor Products TX73T Engine Coolant Temperature Sensor" brass tipped ECTS back in September.
Maybe it is dead now?

I am thinking maybe a Delphi or AC Delco might be in order?

Make sure you do solder splices and then cover with shrink tubing.
No twisted wires with wire nut splices will last.

Does it matter which wires I splice to? Or does it not matter?
