2000 L-Series 2.2L Wagon
Default Front Wheel Noise - Not the Bearing

Hey, long time lurker here.

I've been getting a very loud growling noise from my 2000 SW2 over the last couple of weeks. It happens when I get up to speed (about 40km/h) and it goes away when I turn left.

Since the noise went away with wheel direction I immediately figured it was the front driver's side bearing. Today, I swapped out the bearing hoping to solve the problem.

After changing everything out and going for a test drive, I found that the growling noise was still there, and it still only goes away if I turn left.

Does anyone have any idea if there would be another cause for this type of noise? I'm stumped.

REWARD EXCELLENCE!

CV joint.

To test requires a very tight very low speed circle. Roll up one window and make the turn in the opposite direction, open window side. Listen for 6 periodic pops for each turn of the car wheel or 3 crunches sounding like a handful of potato chips being squeezed. Turn and speed must be such as to cause body roll. Switch open windows and turn direction until you figure out which side the noise is coming from. Try to keep the speed at about 5 mph or so. The outer CV will have 6 distinct pops/rotation and the inner CV will have 3 more muffled crunches/rotation. This tests the axle joints,

Or it still can be the wheel bearing. I had one that only had a bad inner race and made a noise in the wrong direction. I replaced the supposed good side and it went away.

If you can count then you can tell the difference.

OldNuc, that is pretty cool information about determining whether it is a CV joint of not. Is that specific to Saturns or can that test apply to other brands as well?

Generally true for CV axles. Outer joint usually 6 balls and inner 3 needle bearing rollers. Easy to test by hand as you can feel it then but under load they make quite a pop.
