Default Need Camshaft Position Sensor for 2004 ION w 2.2

Hi all,

Anyone know an online source for a Camshaft Position Sensor for 2004 ION w the 2.2 Liter engine? Need one for my car and local mechanic is having no luck finding the part.

Thanks in advance,
Andrew

Also, is a Dorman 917-714 an equivalent part?

Found out that the Dorman is only for the 2.0L engine. Can't find a part # for the 2.2L engine. In fact, one parts dept doesn't believe the 2.2L Saturn has a Cam Position Sensor?!

Any help appreciated,
Andrew

Tried the various GM parts places online for this part and OEM number? Rockauto? I'm sure parts are out there. You just have to dig deeper. The obvious last resort is your local GM dealer.

I checked Rockauto earlier (and again) and it doesn't list the part for the 2.2L (it does for the 2.0L). That does seem to match what one GM Dealer's part dept said when they could not find a part #.

That doesn't seem to sync with the code the mechanic is getting ... I will try to get the code from him and see if he can see the part on the car and read the part #.

Thanks for the help,
Andrew

Iirc, there is no cam sensor on 03-06 2.2s. The cam position is sensed through the watee spark ignition cassette and icm

^ You're right! I'm wrong. From the service manual (relative to P0341);

This ignition system does not use a conventional camshaft position (CMP) sensor that detects valve train position. The ignition control module (ICM) detects when #1 or #3 cylinder has fired on the compression stroke using sensing circuitry integrated within each coil. The sensing circuit detects the polarity and the strength of the secondary voltage output. The higher output is always at the event cylinder. The ICM sends a CMP signal to the engine control module (ECM) based on the voltage difference between the event and waste cylinder firing energy. This system is called compression sense ignition. By monitoring the CMP and crankshaft position (CKP) signals, the ECM can accurately sequence the fuel injectors. If the ECM receives an intermittent CMP signal from the ICM, DTC P0341 sets.

Diagnostic Aids
  • If DTC P0336 is set, diagnose that DTC first. An intermittent fault in the CKP circuit will cause the ECM to resync the cam and may set DTC P0341.
  • An intermittent short to voltage on the CMP signal circuit can set this DTC. A direct short to voltage on the CMP signal circuit will set DTC P0340, as there will be no change in the cam signal input.
  • The following conditions may set this DTC:
  • High resistance in the #1 secondary ignition system
  • Low resistance in the #4 secondary ignition system
  • Corroded or loose #1 or #4 secondary ignition components
  • Harness being routed too close to the secondary ignition components, relays, motors
My apologies for misleading anyone.

It's ok. Everyone sees camshaft position sensor, and unless you know this rather seldom known detail, how else would you know in this car, this is a misleading code.

Gentlemen, excellent news!

I will pass this along to my mechanic and let you know how it turns out.

Regards,
Andrew

Good Morning all,

Mechanic indicated they are seeing an 0340 instead of 0341. Is the repair guidance the same? (So far the harness checks out fine.)

Thanks,
Andrew
