Dazed 99 Saturn SC2 Steering issues this morning

Ok, so I searched the forum and didn't see anything... So here goes:

My SC2 was acting real weird this morning. It was about 35-40 degrees when I left, and I had difficulty turning the steering wheel. Then after I got back home from a short trip (about 10 minutes each way) the steering acted just fine. I let it sit for a while and had to go back out, about 55 outside, and the steering was acting stiff again, I had to make a tight turn to the right and there was a pop sound, but now the steering acts like it should again. I stopped my AutoZone while I was out and the clerk did some research on the computer and said it sounded like a problem with the Rack & Pinion. Does this sound like an accurate guess? If so how bad could this be to fix?

It's kind of hard to say exactly without seeing the car. If you can it would be a good idea to have a shop(dealer or independent), look at your steering/suspension components if you can't yourself. It sounds like maybe the rack or the bearing in the intermediate steering shaft may be binding although on an S-series I've never seen one do that. I would also closely inspect the subframe and lower control arm attaching point areas.

Did you check the power steering fluid? Is it full? Or is it original?

May not be that, but check into it anyway.

I wouldn't really know what to look for. So I will have to take it somewhere if the problem persists. Though I did notice there is a build up of some kind of greyish sludge in the driver side wheel well. I noticed this before when I first got the car and cleaned it out, but now it's back. Not sure if it's related or not.

That was my first guess. Doing fine on that.

The sludge in the wheel well may be a clue, you might have a torn cv boot causing the grease to be flung out. Although cv joint grease is usually a turquoise color.
