Wrench Exhaust connection came apart

Hello everyone,

I noticed the other morning that my car sounded like I had one of those "fart can" mufflers on it.

I looked underneath and saw the exhaust pipe connection between the muffler pipe section and catylitic converter pipe section had broken apart.

I later found the broken bolt with the nut still on it on the garage floor.

I'm guessing that driving over some of the snow plough "glaciers" outside of my house bumped it hard enough to crack it and that starting it up the next morning bounced the broken fastener out.

Everything's still hanging on and the other fastener/nut at the connection are still in tact. The bolt heads look like they're welded on and probably need to be drilled out to replace the fasteners.

I would of course replace both fasteners and replace the gasket for the connection.

Has anyone else had to deal with these welded/riveted fastener heads or have any other tips for repairing this?

The problem

The repair

This is the exhaust flange following the Y-Pipe.

Started by drilling a 1/4" pilot hole through the head of the stud. Increased that to a 3/8ths".

Used some vinegar water on the existing fastener and wire brushed it.

Breaker bar got it loose after some convincing. I didn't want to crank too hard and put too much tension on the Y-Pipe.

Scraped away the old blown out gasket and put a fresh one on.

Inserted new fastener and tightened it up nice.

No more fart can!

Be happy you were actually able to do that, Most exhaust flanges are rotted away so bad an exhaust shop has to weld a new one in.

Yea it does look pretty good underneath. Not bad considering I'm in a salt-using city during the winter.

I wonder how well Barbecue paint or "RUstoleumHIgh HEat" paint would protect all those exhaust parts from corrosion in the SAltBElt...

I got a slight exhaust leak there & my flanges are rusted away. I got to get them welded as, but yours look good like mine did years ago...
