Default Fuel Tank Leaking from "weep hole??"

Long story short. My 1998 SL died on the road last week, felt like it was out of gas. AAA towed me to the mechanic.

My mechanic said it was the fuel pump and replaced it. Curiously, the same problem happened 3-4 years ago but I suppose these after-market fuel pumps don't have a good lifespan....anyway....

The car works fine now, but when I went to fill the tank over the holiday weekend, I got a BIG surprise....gas started streaming out of the back of the fuel tank where the "fill fuel" line goes in. I figured the shop had not tightened the clamp there properly. I don't have ramps so I could not really verify this. After about 3-4 gallons the leak stopped (and the fuel gauge went to 7/8). Car works fine and no more leaking over the weekend.

I just got off the phone with the mechanic and he said they tightened the clamp, but he claims the leak is coming out of the "weep hole" on the black plastic hose that goes into the fuel tank. He said he put some epoxy over that and it should all be ok.

I am hoping what he says is correct, but somehow this does not sit quite right with me.

Suggestions or comments??

No, it is not. The vent and fill hose are designed to be removed from the tank after you disconnect them by removing the screws you see through the fill door. He has now blocked the vent system and probably flooded the charcoal canister.

Ruh Roh. I don't have a ramp as above so I have to rely on others. Can you advise what will happen if I drive it like this? I am hoping it's ok in the short term.

You can buy as set of Rhino Ramps at the parts store for about $50.00 or so and then you can look and see what is going on under there. Should be OK driving it though.

Where are you located? We could probably relate a mechanic in your area who actually CAN work on Saturns.

Or, if you're getting some ramps, you can start working on it yourself! I've found the hardest part of any hard repair is telling yourself you can do it. Especially with these forums available.

Rhino Ramps, $49.99 at Advance Auto. Order online, but choose the "pick up in store option" if there's one close to you, to avoid waiting and shipping charges.

Apply a coupon code from retailmenot.com when you are checking out.

For example, you can use code TRT30 for 30% off, making it $35 for the ramps.

I don't know what you are paying for oil changes, but the tools you need to change your own oil are probably less than two or three oil changes.

Also, you can be sure the right parts will be used. Check your part number for the fuel filter the mechanic installed... there are only a couple that will provide the proper fuel pressure for '98-02 Saturn S-series (Wix 3371 or equivalent, such as the NAPA branded 33731, OEM from dealer, and GK Industries GF1846)

If he used Fram (G9370) or Purolator (F65501) or similar, expect fuel pressure issues in the future.

If I had the chance to do it over again, I wouldn't get the mini-ramps the parts stores sell.

$49.99 doesn't sound like such a good deal if you have Amazon Prime, http://www.amazon.com/RhinoGear-1191...dp/B006EGAIJ2/ ($55, 2-day free shipping and the tread is 10in wide).
Oh, hey these are $5 cheaper and should be just as wide: http://www.amazon.com/RhinoGear-1190.../dp/B006EGAIII

Nothing really wrong with the part store ramps, tread could be stickier for FWD's but AWD fix's that issue. My Outback looks like a fat man in a little coat on them, and my SC2 wasn't far off with 195's.

...
The proper way to fix a S-Series automatic is to replace it with a 5spd O:)

Those are the exact same ramps /part number that I listed at $35 after the online coupon code

Personally, I prefer a jack and stands. Though it'd probably be a good idea to have both.

Actually, I plan on having a garage with a lift at the next/final house I have built.

Thanks for all the suggestions. Currently under investigation.

In the meantime, I have a follow-up question/observation.

The car is running ok. But I seem to notice a slight decrease in power when going up hills and a little bit of a "shudder" and need to downshift earlier than before the repair. Is there a chance that the fuel tank is not vented properly causing this? Or something else that is obvious??

It runs ok otherwise. I have not refilled tank since repair, since I only drive 20-30 miles/day.
