2002 SC2
Default Sudden Slam Shift Problem

Hi - I'm a long time lurker and the site has helped me troubleshoot quite a few issues but I finally had to join to figure this out. I've got a 2002 SC2, DOHC, Auto, 130k.

I just started experiencing a slam shift problem. Never had any tranny problems until this. In fact the car was perfectly fine until accelerating away from a stop and then it just experienced a bone jarring shift and has been doing it since. I've got it parked now because I'm afraid of permanent damage (its so harsh, its actually uncomfortable to drive). It slams in all forward gears and reverse. 2-3 and 3-4 slip a bit but slam eventually. There was no reverse slam before this or any other sign of trouble.

Tested the solenoids, they appear to be fine. Checked the input shaft nut, its fine. Took it to a local transmission shop, he put it on the computer - no codes (No SES light either). He said possibly the clutch packs but he would have to open the transmission up (which would cost me).

The only common thing I can think is the valve body. However, this came on suddenly without warning and affects all forward gears and I'm under the impression that the valve body issue is a gradual problem that affects reverse only. So what do you guys think??

REWARD EXCELLENCE!

This happened to me also in my 99SL2. Never had a problem, then all of a sudden, slam, big time. Parked the car, went to the junk yard, pulled another VB and 1 hour and 60.00 later, everything is good. Sometimes, these things just happen.

You need a valve body.

Get one with the Sonnex upgrades from either Special Forces (on here) or Ken Partin on eBay.

Get it done before you loosen up that Input Shaft Nut or you'll triple your work!

Just be aware that neither Special Forces or Ken Partin do both Sonnax upgrades (the pressure regulator and booster valves). Decide which upgrade you want and order from the appropriate vendor.

Well, I installed a new refurbished valve body. But now the vehicle won't start. It cranks and cranks and cranks but doesn't start. I assume the security system has something to do with this.

The new valve body fixed the shifting right up. It slammed until the computer "relearned" to shift with the new valve body (which had me worried for a bit). Thanks for the advice guys.

I put a new sonnax VB on my old 96 SL1 and it took about 35-45 miles to get all the shifts figured out. I drive 64 miles round trip to work and about 5 miles into my drive home the slam shifting in all gears was gone. The up shift into 4th was the last to get corrected.
