2003 VUE 3.0L
Default intermittent engine oil leak

2003 Vue 6 cyl. 3.0 -
I have an oil leak, about the size of a quarter, for 2-3 days in a row.
Then it stops for a few days. Then starts again.
It drips off from front of engine, slightly toward passenger side of center.
I see some wetness around the valve cover gasket, but this should be a constant leak.
I have replaced the oil pressure switch; no leaks. No leaks from oil filter housing.
My guess is that the v.c. gasket leaks down into a small collection area, where it 'stores up' for a while. When the pool fills, and/or fast/bumpy driving, the pool drains down to garage floor.
Thanks for any suggestions!

Even cam cover gaskets in excellent condition tend to get pushed out of place (perhaps temporarily) if crankcase ventilation system does not maintain internal vacuum.

Problem would be worse during very cold weather (PCV hose freezes) or when you do a lot of low RPM driving.

There's at least one hose (and possibly two) leading from throttle body to the crankcase breather - located on transmission end of engine - cylinder bank nearest windshield.

One way (according to FSM) to verify system is operating normally is to remove oil dipstick - rev engine above 1500 RPM and check for vacuum at dipstick hole.

...
I rarely visit forum but respond to private messages (PM). PM creates email to phone & please include email address with question. Avoid using Visitor Message feature ... I almost never check those.
