Default 2.2l Ecotec Compatability List

Hi all,

I've had my Vue for about 6 months and put about 5,000 miles on her. 2002 2.2L, 5 spd.
The odometer is off, but the engine is approaching 200,000 miles. From what I've read, that seems to be near the record for long life in early 2.2s prior to '04.

I originally bought the Vue for a temporary commuter vehicle, but the versatility of it has really grown on me. 30 mpg on the highway and enough utility to carry nearly anything.

Anyhow, while the engine still runs like a new one, I'm looking to keep the car after the engine dies and want to shop around for a replacement engine in advance. I've found some threads of horror stories about cam sensors and crankshaft position sensors being different so I was wondering if we could compile a list of which year/vehicle 2.2 engines work with which modifications?

A thru E interchange as shown in notes.
Chevrolet 2.2L (4-134).
VIN "D" opt. L61 (Vue & HHR).
VIN "F", opt L61 (others).
AIR check valve for Calif is mounted on the exhaust manifold.
A
B fits by plugging AIR system.
C fits as a service replacement part.
D & E fit by switching heads.
E fits by switching heads.
Exhaust manifold is not drilled & tapped for AIR check valve (Federal).
Oil pan differs between Saturn & GM models.
W/o EGR port in head.
B
C fits by switching AIR system.
D fits by switching AIR system & head.
Exhaust manifold has AIR check valve system (Calif).
W/o EGR port in head.
C
B fits by plugging AIR system.
D fits by switching head.
Plugged exhaust manifold is drilled & tapped for AIR check valve (service
replacement part).
W/o EGR port in head.
D
B fits by plugging AIR system.
C fits by swiching head.
Plugged exhaust manifold is drilled & tapped for AIR check valve (service

The reason for the early failure of the first few years of 2.2L engines has to do with bad timing chain oiler, guides and tensioner. Preventive maintenance of updating these items to the new design will help your engine last indefinitely.
I would not put my time and resources into preparing to replacing the entire engine but rather this preventative maint.

PS: in my first 6 months of ownership, I have added 25k miles returning 26.1 mpg combined.
