Just picked up a 1998 SL 5speed with about 85K on the odometer. Pretty tight little car, but needed some work. Seller is a good local garage owner; I traded with him to replace the exhaust from the cat back, detail the daylights out of the dingy interior, and replace suspension bushings. It has recently replaced rotors, pads and fairly new brake lines, and a steering control arm. Tight steering. Not bad. The paint is in good condition. The undercarriage looks quite solid, without any advanced rusting.
I've been looking for a simple, safe car for my daughter to have at college, and this looks like it's going to fit the bill. So of course I went nuts on ebay... new neoprene seat covers are coming, exterior clean up goodies, a bunch of foil backed sound deadener to line the trunk and all that. And I ordered a set of Motegi rims and 4 new snow tires, as the original rims were ok but looked like they belonged on a scooter. I feel like a little motorhead kid again; actually having some fun with this thing.
A small oil leak looks like its coming from a valve cover gasket - very high and not an apparent seal leak. I wonder if the valve cover was over torqued at some point.
The headlight lenses are a mess. They're intact but weather blasted. I have some polishing compound I'll try on them. And the battery, although working fine, looks suspiciously original . . .
