Default Enlarged section of exhaust do anything?

Hey guys. 99 sl2 here. So the other day my exhaust broke off right behind the flange which is in back of the cat. A little after that flange there's an enlarged section of pipe. At both ends of this enlargment its pretty badly rusted so I was thinking of cutting the whole thing out and replacing it with regular pipe. My question is does this enlargment do anything for performance? Thanks

The resonator? Helps shape the sound...probably ok to straight pipe it. The SL1 aftermarket pipe deletes it...

Wow I just cut it out and I'm really suprised by all the stuff inside it. Like this weird bumpy helix thing. I feel kinds bad deleting it although it looks like part of it is loose.

Deleting it won't affect emissions, and won't change exhaust sound too much. Have you checked price on a replacement resonator?

Either another resonator or a glass pack muffler will work.

Cherry Bomb 87520 - 2 inch inlet/outlet
87521 - 2 1/4
87522 - 2 1/2

...
2002 Silver SL2, manual, 5th gear swap (.605), 78,000 miles, black badges,

Pennzoil Ultra Platinum 5W-30, NAPA 41516...

Thanks guys, I ended up just replacing it with a 3 foot section of 2 inch exhaust pipe. Its sounds a little more obnoxious now but I really needed to fix it asap and as cheap as possible. If it hadn't broken right at the flange I probably would have soup canned it until I had more time and money to do it nicely. Either way it all welded up now so at least I have my car back!

The resonator removes exhaust rasp and “popping” noise when you left off the throttle rapidly. Installing a resonator rather than just pipe wouldn’t have been much more expensive. Probably less then $50.

Interesting, I noticed on my SW2 theres a resonator right after the converter and on my SL1 theres no resonator at all just a regular 2 inch pipe all the way back to the muffler, They both have the original exhausts, Did saturn drop the resonator at some point?? My Wagon is a 2000 and the SL1 is an 2002??? Or was the resonator used only on the Twin cam models???

No, it was just a cost saving measure. SOHC engines do not have the resonator.
