Happy P0410 final solution

I thought that I had conquered my P0410 secondary air system fault code, but after a couple months it came back. I decided to create a new thread so everyone can see my final solution. To see the history of my problem go here:

http://www.saturnfans.com/forums/sho...=1#post2009536

I went ahead and replaced the diverter valve which unfortunately did not solve the problem. I got another blower, which also did not solve the problem. I rechecked everything else and found nothing wrong.

Long story short, I ended up having to remove the exhaust manifold and clean out the air intake ports on the front of the engine. I had done this once before, but I didn't realize how deeply the carbon build up went into the ports. I posted a video here:

https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=E6z0d_AuKY8

I think the problem is solved once and for all now. I hope this helps others.

This code can be a nightmare, especially if your area has emissions inspections that require no trouble codes in order for your car to pass... like mine.

REWARD EXCELLENCE!

Fyi that is an SC2 not an SC1 as stated in your other thread. The 2 stands for twin cam.

Very nice informative video btw.

Thanks. I've read a lot of posts where people have struggled with this code for the exact same reasons I have. I thought the video might help.

How many miles are on your Saturn? I'm wondering how long it takes to build up carbon to the point of cleaning out the exhaust manifold.

Mine were packed solid when I cleaned them around 160k. They are partially plugged again at 220k, as I get a P0410 every now and then, but it goes away on its own.

Cleaning the air passages in the head on a DOHC is a real PIA, as they are curved. On the SOHC, they are straight holes that can easily be cleaned with a drill bit spun by hand.

I had the same everything with everything working but when I put compressed air to blow out the exhaust manifold the pending code went away when the engine was already hot, so I do not have enough air flow with the cold start is what I think even though the pump is blowing good

Who is this Richpin everyone speaks of? Well, mine was solved by replacing the diverter valve - its been about 18 months ago and I haven't had trouble with the code returning. Thanks for your input.
