Default Side mirrors

Hello all

Well again something very odd happend to the Astra without any reason. The right side mirror on the door just the glass well it just fell off and fell to the floor and well it brook into a million peaces. So i call up the dealer and just for the glass 150.00$ WOW so again Ebay and i found full assembly but for both sides for 49.00$ and they come with the defrost in them. WOW GM realy makes money. So i ordered them. Now i got them and i need to replace the broken one. Does any body here done this before. I know they are just clipped on but i just want to make sure i do it the right way.

Thanks all

  • Pry off the interior trim panel where the tweeter is located. It is held on with three retaining clips.

  • Remove the foam insulation from the interior trim panel.

  • Disconnect the speaker wiring connector and set trim pieces aside.

  • Disconnect wiring connector for the mirror.

  • Remove three mirror retaining screws (torx screws) to remove mirror assembly from door.

  • Remove outer cover by prying on the outer edge. It is held by four clips on the top and four on the bottom

  • Install outer cover on your new assembly and install new mirror assembly in reverse order.

Sorry you do not need to take off the mirror. This is only the mirror by it self that i need to change. We do not need to take out the hole mirror for this.

Okay then.
  • Depress the upper-inner corner of the mirror (side closest to car)

  • Pry on the outermost corner to separate mirror backing from the retaining clips

  • Disconnect the two defrosting element wires

  • Install wires on new mirror

  • CAREFULLY depress the mirror into the retaining clips. Too much force on a single point can crack the mirror, so try your best to spread out the pressure.

  • Have a beer and smile at your handiwork

Well, that took all of only three hours from initial post to "level completed". Good job!

OK... Mine fell out last night. This is looking to need a recall.

Here is a shot of it...

At first it looked like it had smoke damage. Nope... is just the metallic backing. Only the glass fell off.

I found one on eBay... hopefully it fits. It is on the way now.

I contacted Saturn/GM Customer Care. The rep said to have it diagnosed... that way if I attempt to have it covered, they will have record of the issue.

Since I was also having the intermittent horn issue, the shop combined the "diagnoses" of missing mirror glass on the same work order for the horn, so it is guaranteed to be seen by GM.

I find the term diagnosis pretty funny... but that is what the GM rep said. Diagnose the missing glass...

Mine fell out a couple of months ago - the right side - but fell onto about ten inches of snow, so it didn't break. The glass place glued it back on for me.

How strange that so many have had the same problem!

Good thread since this is a common issue. Love my Astra, but my right side mirror glass fell off when my friend closed the door. It shattered spectacularly. Fix this GM!

it takes time to get use to the convexe view, especially with the blue tint. But they come with wiring for your heated mirror connection. Also they can be installed in 15 mins.

Well, my passenger side mirror just fell off today too. $60 for the dealer to order it and there will be labor added on to that when it finally arrives. The glued area looks EXACTLY like the picture posted here.

I had the glass (which comes with the plastic back) shipped from a place in England for about $30 total. It was here in a few days. The labor to install the glass was about one minute total. connect the heater wire, line the glass up, and gently press. Viola!

Ordered a $20 replacement mirror on ebay on monday night, so i should get it friday, and i'll post back as to how it fits. seems like a good cost-effective solution, although GM really should warranty this.

would've posted the link, but i haven't made 15 posts yet

this happened to me as well this past winter, the snow caught the mirror so i just used some 3m adhesive and that seemed to do the trick. super weird
