Default Signals/lights acting weird plus P0705

Any help appreciated! 2004 Saturn Vue 3.5L fwd.
When I hit the right turn signal, ALL the lights blink faintly: instrument cluster, radio, lighted gear selector, etc. Similarly, when I hit the brakes, all of these light up.
If I turn the headlights on and do the same thing, then I don't notice anything amiss (which may not mean anything I guess)
This started a couple days ago. Then today the car throws a P0705 code. From a quick search this seems to be the transmission range sensor. But the timing is odd. I wonder what is causing what. Could a blown range senor be causing the odd signal/light issue? Or could the light/signal issue cause the blown sensor? or is there nothing wrong with the sensor?
I looked around at all the lightbulbs and they all seem to be working, none blown. Also tested charging system and looks fine 14.26V.
Any suggestions?

Also - took it for another ride and it seems to be shifting through all the gears. I guess if it was really the tranny range sensor that was blown then it wouldn't shift past 3rd gear?

To best of my knowledge the only external lighting circuit connected to transmission range switch would be the back-up lights.

I think my first troubleshooting step would be to remove the back-up lamp bulbs and see if the other symptoms are changed.

If symptoms remain the same - you may have to remove each bulb - one at time - while looking for a bad bulb or corroded socket.

However, if you have a tow package I'd cut to chase and examine that wiring first as your complaint is one of the classic problems caused by trailer lighting wires touching other wiring.

Yep - I have the classic spliced uhaul wiring.
I checked that out but couldn't see any obvious culprit.
But since you mention it I wonder if I should consider removing all the splicing and going from there since I've had issues before. Any advice on how to do that? How to remove after they have tapped in to all the lines? Can the taps be removed easily or do I have to cut and reattach everything?

I believe most Vue's were born with a trailer wiring loop stored in the jack compartment. Most DIY'ers tap into wiring there when installing the typical five-to-four wire adapter required for small utility trailers.

If U-HAUL did wiring they could have ignored the factory pigtails and tapped into where-ever the prevailing mood took them.

If any part of trailer wiring is outside the cabin - check carefully for muffler or tailpipe melting action.

Pulled out all the spliced in uhaul wiring - solved the weird light/signal problem!
Cleared the check engine code and took it for a spin. Now discovering that turning on the A/C trips the P0705 code and I get the associated symptoms of not shifting past 3rd gear.
Checked the fuses and discovered that the A/C clutch fuse is blown (no wonder there was no cold air . Replaced fuse and all seems well now.
I guess the bad wiring may cause contributed to the ac clutch fuse blowing and that is somehow connected to the tranny sensor issue.
Oh well - looks fixed for now
Thanks for the help and encouragement
