Question 2002 SC2 Engine swap

Whats good people.

I've been drifting around the forums for a while now, made an account as it seems you all know your stuff.

Anyways, to the point...

Once upon a time, I seized my engine up in my 2002 Saturn SC2.
Had some severe oil problems and it progressed to the point where it was bone dry and the seizure took place.
Manual transmission.

So that was eventful. At any rate I've stumbled across a 1999 Saturn SL2 with a decent motor. The issue is its an automatic transmission, while mine is a manual 5 speed.

Both engines are 1.9L, DOHC, look identical. So my Question is would it be possible to put this engine into my car? From what I understand most of the parts in the S series are interchangeable. If I took the flywheel from the manual and put it on the automatic would it work?

If it works out I basically scored an engine for $300 or less by the time I junk the other one or part it out. So I'm really hoping it'll work out.

Thanks in advance guys,
Z

I'm sure people with more experience will chime in, but with regards to the transmission, you are basically doing a version of this, so the transmission is a non-issue for you in the engine swap:

Welcome to the forums, the amount of experience and knowledge here is pretty amazing.

Since the new engine is out of the car, you may want to look at some of the rebuild threads - since you don't really know the condition of the replacement engine, might be worth it to know you have a good engine, and take care of the oil burning problems

It is possible, because I have done exactly what you are asking.

It will require some extra work, and parts from the 99, such as
throttle cable
fuel line
air intake tube and air filter box
cut and solder the diff fuel injector clips and MAP sensor connector.
You will have to fabricate your own special threaded rod to hold the different knock sensor.

I have a post about what I did, just too lazy to look it up. :-)

Once I know who posted in the thread and some terms, it's easy to search. Used this string in google:

It's the 4~7 one down, but the others look like they are worth reading

Question Re: 2002 SC2 Engine swap

Ok, sounds like there is hope, this is good.

If I dropped both cars off at a mechanic would he be able to make this work? As in, would a regular mechanic be able to preform the required tasks and have the know how to do it or is this more Of an advanced thing?

Reason being is its cold out, I don't have the tools for it, and honestly I would prefer to have someone more knowledgeable than I complete these tasks.

Keep in mind I have no intentions of keeping the SL2 auto, I'm just looking for a cheap fix for my SC2 manual. (aside from labor costs)

Thanks for you input guys. It's highly appreciated.

Question Re: 2002 SC2 Engine swap

Going to apologize for the double post ahead of time, but while we're on the topic and it's fresh in my mind, do any of you know a way to free a seized engine? I've heard of marvel mystery oil, and good things about it.

Either way I've had a mechanic put a 6 foot bar on it and it wouldn't budge at all. In so far as I know there was no rods thrown or anything damaged. Just a light seizure.

Tear it apart. Seized usually means something melted and or broke .

Im not a mechanic and I did it. So if your mechanic is squeamish about doing it, then thats your first clue to take it to someone else.

Valid point sir. I called him and he was confident that he could do it.

Waiting on a call back from the other Saturn owner. Hoping this works out.

Make sure the 99 engine has the exhaust manifold and cylinder head set up for A.I.R. injection. I think it was avaliable both ways in 99.
