2009 AURA XE
Default Clean camshaft sensors - 2.4 L

If anyone has experienced a loud knock or scrape sound @ startup may try cleaning their intake and exhaust cam sensor assemblies.

They are located on the far left hand side on top of the engine. Remove the engine cover and you will see them.

They are held on by 10mm bolts. I removed them and soaked them in parts cleaner up to the rubber o-ring. The screens were a little dirty, but nothing too bad.

I then sprayed them off with electronics part cleaner to remove any residue and let them dry.

Lastly I filled a small cup with 5/30 oil and dipped them to the o-rings making sure oil filled each one.

I then reinstalled them being sure not to over tighten. Both the sensors and head are labeled INT for intake and EXT for exhaust.

I did notice the subsequent starts were more quiet, need to wait and see if there is any grinding or slamming on startup anymore.

Edit: I did mean Camshaft Position Actuator Solenoid , not just "sensors".

I'm glad you posted this. My Aura just recently starting making a noise similar to what you described. I will have to take those out and clean them.

Thanks!

David

I'm going to see if cleaning them will solve this. If not, I'll just replace them as they are only $30 or so each.

2009 AURA XE
Default Re: Clean camshaft sensors - 2.4 L

My '09 Aura XE 2.4L threw out this code last summer, shortly after I bought the car from a dealer...and after the very short warranty expired. The Check Engine light will come on and stay on for days, then not light up for a while, then come back on, etc.

I do know where, and how to replace the sensor, but if it's anything else like a solenoid, then I'm clueless as to how to find and fix it myself. I'd like to do it myself and save some money...and learn something!

My engine sounds like it needs to shift, yet it shifts just fine.

Thanks for any help and advice!

2007 VUE Green Line
Default Re: Clean camshaft sensors - 2.4 L

I know this thread is over a year old, but I just wanted to thank everyone who contributes valuable information on the forum!

My 2007 Vue with the same 2.4L has been sporadically giving P0010 error codes and has the same metallic 'banging' sound at startup.

I didn't diagnose the error code further because it always seems to go away on it's own...and I just assumed the sound at startup was a part of the exhaust system rattling because I couldn't narrow down exactly where it was coming from.

After finding this thread I decided to remove both 'sensors' and clean them and sure enough, the startup noise went away!

I'm not sure how long of a 'fix' it will be, but if I hear the startup noise come back and I continue to get the error code I'll probably have to replace both parts, but at least it's a simply DIY-job thanks to all the great info here.
