I assume you must be looking at a 5 door XR version.

The 3 doors only came in XR, 5 could be had in XE and XR.

Its easier just to direct you to edmunds.com

The main differances between the XE and the XR, comparing the 5 doors of course, has nothing to do with engine power or performance. The XR has a closer ratio steering and I believe a slightly shorter turning radius. The XR has the available sport suspension package which includes a stiffer suspension with the 17'' alloy 5 spoke wheels. This is not an option on the XE. The XR also sits 10 cm lower than the XE. On the outside of the vehicle the XR has bright stainless steel trim below the side windows. On the XE they are black rubber covered. On the inside most strikingly or not very strikingly is the subdued and rather bland XE upholstery. There is a small dot pattern on the XE as opposed to a richer weave pattern on the XR. You could have gotten an XR with the rare leather seating but not on the XE. The dash and console trim on the XE is a metallic charcoal color compared to an argent silver color on the XE. I have heard the interiors on the Astra called "funeral" or "depressision era". Although I like them just fine and appreciate a European styled interior. Who needs 8 cup holders anyway? The XR has map pockets on the rear of the front seats where the XE has none. Lastly the XE may or may not be available with the CD30 MP3 but was never available with the upgraded CD40 sound system. Well that is all I can think of, but there may be more. I own an 2008 XE 5 door and a 2008 XR 3 door, both manual transmissions. The XE has a little more pep but that could be because it is more "broken in" with over 67,000 miles and the XR has barely 17,000 miles on the odometer. Hope this helps.

As there is minimal price difference between the XE and XR these days go with the XR. You will get a lot more options.

Traction control, I believe, is standard on the XR too. I think it's optional on the XE. Mine didn't come with it.

I think you can get an XE with the CD30 MP3, but I've never seen one with it. Radios are pretty lame across the board, though.

Even A/C is an option on the XE. Even so, I've never seen one without it...

Speaking of Saturn Astras without air conditioning. I have only seen one for sale, an XE of course, and they are mighty rare. I had read somewhere that 97% of new cars manufactured do come with air conditioning.

I have a 2009 XE:
- no A/C
- no traction control
- CD 30
It's the lowest possible model. I believe the 2008's came standard with 16" alloy's. Mine came with 16" steelies and hubcaps, so I just bought the alloy rims afterward on kijiji for $300.

What kind of gas mileage do you get with an Astra without A/C? The best mine is ever got was not quite 36 mpg. Mine being an XE5 5 speed with the A/C off, and driving with the cruise control on terrain ranging from flat to rolling hills. I'll add at highway speeds mostly from 58-62 mph, using pure gasoline fuel, (no ethonol added). I am kind of interested.

My best ever mileage was 38..but that was on a windy road that I kept a pace of 55-65, and didn't have to stop.

The mileage I was most impressed with was 32 mpg when I was on I-90 in Penn., 75 mph, a/c blasting, 100 degrees outside, 4 people in the car and the rear was loaded to the top with stuff.

So..does anyone know what the extra red around the speedometer/tachometer means on an XR? I thought all Astras had it but I guess I was wrong.
This is what mine looks like:

look at the pictures. does that mean i shouldnt rev the motor past 0?

It took a few views to realize what you are talking about. I think it is just a fancier graphic for the upscale model. pretty silly, thanks for pointing it out. now the next time someone asks about the difference between the xe and xr we will have something significant that they probably wont change.

I believe he was referring to the red line at the 30MPH and 70MPH line on the speedo which can be noticed on both the xr and xe

i thought when he said "the extra red around the speedometer/tachometer" he was talking about the red line that goes around the speedometer and tachometer (that you have to do a double take to see), not the lines at 30 and 70 that both have. oops. my bad.
