Cool Used Oil Analysis Thread for Our Engines.

Hello,

We need a thread where we can put all of out Used Oil Analysis reports.

I am doing a project on studying the miles, miles on oil, type of oil, usage, wear, etc. I need to collect as much data as possible, so please... list your reports.

Here's my 1st one on Creampuff to start:

From January 2012 on my 2000 SL2 w/37,184 on the engine:

Blackstone Comments: These results leave us with no doubt that your SL2's engine was very well take care of its by its previous owner. Twenty oil changes over the course of 33,000 miles is almost unheard of and certainly not necessary. Though you do no get to reap the rewards, since your twin cam 1.9L is the nicest we can remember seeing in recent history.

The viscosity read down in the 5W/20-grade range, but that's not a concern since no contamination that could have lowered the viscosity was present. Your engine looks like it was locked in a time capsule then brought out good as new.

All AC Delco 5w-30 at Saturn Dealership from PO. I ran it up to 4k then sampled.

Now, the most recent on my 2000 SL2 with 54,464 & 5010 miles on Pennzoil Ultra + PureOne Ext. Length:

From Blackstone:

Thanks for the notes. The first analysis from your Saturn was indeed excellent, and this second sample is in great shape as well. Wear metals barely changed since last time, aside from minor 1 ppm fluctuation, so you're well on your way to some nice, steady wear trends. We like to see consistent wear levels across several samples, because that's a great indication that the engine is running well and has no problems developing. The viscosity was normal for Pennzoil Ultra 5W/30 this time, and no contaminants or other issues were found, so you get a perfect report!

Not a scientific analysis by any means, but a couple of years ago, when I ran Valvoline MaxLife Full Synthetic, my 1995 SC1 ran the smoothest and quietest it ever has. I would still be using it, but it is VERY difficult to find. None of the auto part stores seem to carry it.

Quite interesting to see. This gauges the metal deposits of the engine from using a full cycle of oil?

is it safe to use that oil on a car that has 240k miles? I have a sl2 same year twin cam, looking to spoil the engine and pamper it( and if it runs hella better then thats good too)

I don't have an oil analysis to share, but my dad was a fleet mechanic, who swore by 2000-2500 mile oil changes regardless of duty for everything he drove. We followed that cycle on my SL (owned since 29k miles, now at 186k) and to date it still doesn't even use a half quart of oil on changes. I'm told this is unheard of, that saturn engines or at least the sohc ones should be using a quart every 3k or so.

Universal averages show typical wear levels for this type of engine after about 4,000 miles on the oil.
The only metal higher than averages here is copper. That shows some extra wear at brass/bronze parts like
a bushing or other valve train component. It's not enough to call a problem, but we'll keep an eye on it.
Silicon could show abrasive dirt, so check the air filtration system. It could also be a sealer or additive. The
TBN was 4.0 showing plenty of active additive left. Change this oil out due to copper and silicon and check
back in 3,000 miles again.

You may wanna scrub all your personal info off of it...

M1-EP with 3,000 miles was brought down to a TBN of just 3.2. It's not brought down linear, but still, that's quite low for just 3,000 miles.
