Question Use of Engine Block Heater

I have not used my engine block heater much, but the forcast for tonight here in southern Minnesota is -15 below zero. My question is, do I need to leave it plugged in all night or would just a couple hours prior to starting my car tomorrow be sufficient? I assume engine block heaters use a lot or electricity.

I would assume the length of time needed would be based on the wattage and how cold- can you spare a dime for the convenience of a quick start?

Is it aftermarket? What's the wattage draw( it should say somewhere on it)? Put it on a timer if you want.

Looks like it's best to set it on a timer to turn on 1.5-2hrs before leaving (after 2hrs it doesn't get warmer): http://www.metrompg.com/posts/block-...to-plug-in.htm

Of course, that's done with a glorified bicycle motor rather than a true automobile motor so it may take longer.

The proper way to fix a S-Series automatic is to replace it with a 5spd O:)
