Default LED Door light mod

I'm thinking of getting some LED light strips and placing them below the lip of the door under the car and wiring them in with the door sensor so they turn on when the door is open, so it is easier to see where I am stepping at night. How hard would it be to wire them in with that sensor?

This is the schematic for the door switches. Notice that the lights are always powered and the switch just applies a ground. http://www.saturnfans.com/photos/sho...ring/cat/12963

I don't know a whole lot about wiring, was going to have my dad help me with the mod. The lights would still only come on when the door is open correct? Also, it won't blow a fuse or anything would it (Granted LED's don't use much juice at all.)

If you wire it right, it should work without blowing fuses, etc. LEDs don't draw a lot of power.

That's what I thought. Only way to find out is to try

Anyone have any opinions on my idea for this mod? I might try splicing a red light strip in with the brake lights across the rear reflector as well. Also, I figured I'd try superbrightleds.com for the light strips since I had seen it recommended by a few other members. Anyone here bought from them before?

I replaced the dome light with a dual map light rear view mirror in my SC2. Door switch's didn't work anyway, and the dome light broke.

With my SW2 I plan on adding a couple strips on the roof line trim panels with LED's, wired into the rear dome light. Might even do the same thing to the fronts

How hard was it to wire the mirror? Also, how did you fill in the hole from the dome light?

Had to refinish the headliner, so "filling in" the hole was as easy as not cutting it out of the fabric
Add's ~$55 and ~1.5hrs to the project if you want to do it, I chose black from Jo-Ann Fabrics and am very happy with it.

As the wires are inside the cabin and I don't have a sunroof I used shrink wrap to "neaten" the wires from the mirror up into the headliner, cut the power & ground wires to the dome light & used crimp connections to put it back together. If at some point I do want a dome light in the stock location again, I can just cut the hole out and pull the plug out to the hole and it'll work properly.

Ah. I don't think I'll do the mirror mod because I'm not having any problems with my headliner and would rather not risk messing it up

Something I should have asked in my first post, if I do go through with this mod, where are the wires I would need to splice into located at? Are they part of the door switch/sensor or will I have to do some improvising to get to the proper wires?

Get 2 colors of wire, about 1.5ft long. Use one for power, one for ground. Take the dome light out, carefully shove a coat hanger forwards. Once its out the front of the headliner, tape the wires for the mirror to it and pull back towards the dome light. All done and nothing broken

Not to be picky or anything but wouldn't the headliner sag where the hanger pushed the wire through? Or did you mean straighten a wire coathanger out and use that?

Yes, straighten the coat hanger out before using it. I don't think I've properly used a coat hanger in years so the thought of not straitening it out is foreign
Hmm...you say "wire coat-hanger" like there's other options I don't know about

If your careful it won't hurt anything. You'll have to wiggle it quite a bit and try to focus the pressure towards the roof line so it doesn't come through the headliner. I found it to be a rather easy project, but I had taken a bunch of headliners out before hand so I wasn't worried about breaking anything 'cause I know what's up there.

Other options...I could probably find a TON laying around in my dads garage. I'd probably rather use the coat hanger though

Wait a minute...Who here thinks it would be easier, and put out more light if I used smaller strips on the undersides of the mirrors and then ran the wires through the mirror housing instead of putting them under the rocker panel?

On the doors or the mirrors, this is one of those things that will either turn out very neat, or very tacky. It's all in the details. Most of the cars I've seen or heard of with something like what you're describing do it on the underside of the mirror, but it would probably be harder to hide any imperfections in the mod there.

Yeah, I did some thinking and I think if I go through with it, it'll be on the undersides of the doors. Might go with the side emitting ones that'll put out more light in the right direction instead of straight down.

I would just go with putting l.e.D's under the door it will be cleaner and put the light were ur wanting it. They sell something like what u want for the miata's so a small 8inch led strip should be more than adequate lighting.
