To add one more potential leak-point/point-of-failure? Can never have too many on a 10~22 yr old car

I think the idea is to "pre-filter" the gas - one more filter between the sock filte in the tank and the expensive filter. Replace the cheaper inline fuel filter periodically and theoretically extend the filter life (at least the filter portion, not sure how often the pressure regulator part fails)

I've seen some clear inline gas filters a long time ago

I have yet to find a filter/regulator that had anything in the filter unless the fuel pump had self destructed.

That is why I asked "for what purpose?"

Yeah, having to spend $40-ish every 100,000-ish miles, that's just financially crippling, to the tune of a penny every 25 miles!.....

I've had to buy 2 because I've had 2 saturns. Got the filter out without taking out the bolts. it was a pain in the ass, but not as bad as breaking bolts

...

I burn about a quart about every 1500 miles.

If it ain't broke, fix it some more.
