Default Replacing DEX III with ATF+4

I've read a bunch of other fourms where people have been substuting ATF+4 for DEX III.

What are your thoughts? Its synthetic, and has all but the same weight as DEX III (SUS and CST wise at 100C) only difference seems to be what friction modifiers are in it compared to DEX III.

ATF +4 is a Chrysler spec fluid, I wouldn't put that in a GM trans.

A full synthetic universal ATF is ATF+4 compatible as well as Dex 2 and 3 compatible. The Generic Chrysler ATF+4 is not backward compatible with Dex 2 and 3 however unless so marked on the package.

Using an ATF marked as ATF+4 does not guarantee Dex 2 and 3 compatibility though.

yeah really, not to mention Chryslers need stickier fluid, this is where ATF+whatever comes in. Our transmissions don't need fluid as sticky, hence why we use Dexron (preferably III in this case).

and don't think about putting ATF+whatever in a Ford trans either..

With the track record of the Chrysler transmissions, I think I'd pass on that one! You never know, maybe it has something to do with their "unique" fluid.

actually, the "unique" fluid was designed to fix the problems that the a604 4-speed automatic had with dexron.

Actually my 1994 cummins has 160,000 miles behind my foot. It's had either Pennzoil multi vehicle or ATF+4 it's entire life. Mostly the Pennzoil though. It still will chirp tires shifting into 2nd.

I use the Pennzoil in the satty.

Actually most of those issues were driveabillity issues, bump shift, and erratic shifting. For the most part the units were not "blowing up". This was due to the unique way clutch volumes were measured and pressure was regulated. Especially with the torque converter having the ability to partial lock. Dexron just did not behave well and caused shuddering.
Odds are using ATF+4 in a GM trans would most likely result in no issue maybe even behaving better. But bottom line the Chrysler units were not the dogs they were made out to be. I personally know of many of them that were replaced because the service manager "said to". Once they (Chrysler) got the fluid formulated well and got away from a couple seal designs that caused the bump shift they are really very good units

I love the 545RFE in my 2004 Grand Cherokee. I just wish it locked up the TC every shift like the Saturn. Also wish it stayed locked up on decell like the Saturn.

The A999 in the 86 CJ7 has 160,000 on it also. I had it gone threw at 120,000 when I replaced the engine. They said the clutch plates still specked out to new. So all they did was replace bushings and seals.

I also wish I could figure out the PID address for the grand cherokees trans temp like I found it in the satty for my scangauge.
