Default P0449 (Evaporative Emission Control System Vent Valve/Solenoid Circuit Malfunction)

2007 Aura XE
2.5L V6

We have a check engine light showing on the dash (it looks like a little engine). We used a scanner to read a P0449 (Evaporative Emission Control System Vent Valve/Solenoid Circuit Malfunction) from car's computer.

Anyone have any experience on this?

It could be a bad evap canister vent solenoid valve or it's circuit. Can't know which without troubleshooting. It's not an easy valve to replace as it's above the fuel tank.

I got a chance to take a look under the car.

As you can see from the image below, the part has two large openings (one on each side). Are hoses supposed to be attached to both sides?

I ask because there is nothing attached to the upper opening.

Also, the instructions from AllDataDIY says to loosen three of the four fuel tank strap bolts. How long are these bolts? And are they all the same size? I want to loosen them so that there is some working room, but I don't want to loosen them too much and have them fall out (and possibly cause damage if the fuel tank falls and shifts).

You found the problem. Did you see the detached hose?

No. I looked around, but didn't see any other hose. What is the hose supposed to attach to?

Are you sure that there is supposed to be a hose on both sides?

I ask because all of the AllDataDIY.com images show only one side attached. For example, here is one of the images:

In addition, their instructions only talk about detaching one hose from one side.

My bad. That's just the fresh air inlet. Sometimes they'll have a hose attached on that side.

Can't say how long they are but support the tank with jacks or jackstands if that's all you have. If there is much fuel in it it'll be heavy.

Is this problem related to the P0455 code?
I have had the same code come up despite replacing the gas cap.

Any help would be appreciated...

455 means the vacuum leak test is repeatedly failing. There is a breach somewhere in the system. You can start by getting the system smoke tested. Sometimes you can just clear the code & it won't come back, at least for awhile. Sometimes a new gas cap solves it.

Diagnostic Aids
Inspect for a loose, missing, incorrect, or damaged fuel fill cap.

Verify that the fuel filler neck sealing surface is not distorted or damaged.

To help locate intermittent leaks, use the J 41413-200 (J 41413-100) EEST to introduce smoke into the EVAP system. Move all EVAP components while observing smoke with a high intensity white light.

Reviewing the Failure Records vehicle mileage since the diagnostic test last failed may help determine how often the condition that caused the DTC to be set occurs. This may assist in diagnosing the condition.

A condition may exist where a leak in the EVAP system only exists under a vacuum condition. By using the scan tool Purge/Seal function to create a vacuum, seal the system and observe the FTP parameter for the vacuum decay, this type of leak may be detected.

If a small leak is difficult to find, it may be necessary to remove the EVAP components and leak test them one at a time using the adapters in the J 41413-300 Kit .
