Default Coolant leak - 2001 SL1

I sold this car to a nice young couple and they brought it back to me after a few months, saying the car was leaking coolant.

She had her uncle who's a mechanic put the car on his lift, but he couldn't find any leaks, even with the car running. They say they can fill the reservoir up and drive around the city for 3-4 days before the coolant light comes on, but if they're on the highway, it's every hour!

I replaced the radiator and water pump before I sold the car, and those look fine. However, the back of the engine is covered in dried coolant and a few drips.

It looked like it might be coming from the intake? Does that gasket have coolant running through it?

I tried to snap a couple pics from under the car:

I am not sure about the SOHC, but IIRC the DOHC plastic intake manifold has a coolant passage from the head run into it on that side on the 3rd gens.

When I changed my intake manifold gasket, I recall a little, rectangular, rubber seal on a port in the head. Believe this was a coolant port, but I have no idea where the coolant went, if anywhere. The FelPro replacement gasket did not come with this little seal, so I reused the old one. Someone on here surely knows what this port is for.

On the DOHC, it connects to the little 5/16's or whatever size coolant hose that runs over to the coolant reservoir.

I checked out some old threads and it seems that the Gen 3 SOHC intake manifold gasket is known for high idle and leaking coolant!

I talked to them again with a price for the repair, but they weren't interested. They're leaving on a 500 mile trip tomorrow and said they will just keep refilling it with water. I get the feeling that these people can't afford much, but they might be in for a blown engine sooner than later.

I can certainly vouch for the vacuum leak - that's why I changed my gasket. I can also imagine that if that little seal had fallen on the ground when I separated the manifold, I would have never known it had been there and put the car back together without it. Maybe that is what happened to this car?

It could be, but it's not my problem any more! You can only be so helpful in offering advice. The uncle mechanic is going to replace the gasket when they get back from their trip, so I'm out of it now.

HELP! I am new to the Saturn family but I have a problem that I need some advice. I just bought a 2001 Saturn SL1 on Saturday. I drove it to work this morning and the coolant light came on, the coolant level was low when i checked it BUT most importantly there was a spot where the coolant obviously leaked on ground at front of the car, driver's side. I also noticed that when I place the car in 'park' the idle INCREASED instead of backing off! Please Help! I bought the car because I blew a water pump on my Mazda B3000 and bent a push rod! I must have reliable transportation because there is NO organized bus system.

You should start a new thread but I'll respond to you here. I would closely inspect your radiator by the upper hose connection, they like to crack there, it's possible the intake gasket may be leaking coolant but it's rare on a sohc engine. For the high idle, the next time it does that shut the car off and wait about 30 seconds or so. Then restart and see if the idle goes back to normal. If it does, the tps is probably bad and needs replacement.

Click the "new thread" and go from there, I see you already figured it out though with your new thread.
