Default 1998 SL2 DOHC no spark???

My 1998 Saturn SL2 DOHC is not getting spark. We swapped coil packs and the plate underneath from another Saturn and still no spark. Then we changed the crankshaft position sensor but still no luck. I can hear the fuel pump turn on and it will crank all day but does not sound even remotely like starting. Am I missing a sensor or computer module somewhere? Ideas?

REWARD EXCELLENCE!

Did you check the EIS fuse in the fuse box? Diagram is in the lid.

Check the fuse. If that checks out, check power and ground at the ICM (the thing under the coils).

Have you actually confirmed that there's no spark, or are you assuming so because you can hear the fuel pump run? Verify there is no spark with a spark tester if you have one, or remove all four wires from the coils and have someone crank it while you watch the coil towers--if the ignition system is working, you will see arcing between the towers; if there is no arcing, you will know you're on the right track.

A dead fuel pump is no the only cause of a fuel issue. You could have a leaking regulator or a damaged line in the tank (not common issues on S-Series, but it does happen). This would be seen with a fuel pressure test (you can borrow a pressure tester from Autozone, if you don't own one). Even if there is fuel pressure, if the injectors don't fire, the engine won't get any fuel. The easiest way to check this is with a noid light (a purpose made test light that replaces the injector in the circuit--using "any old test light" is a bad idea, as improper impedance (allowing too much current) can fry the PCM). Assuming you don't have one, you should first check the injector fuse; if that's good, check for power at the injectors, with a voltmeter (they are ground switched, so they should have constant power with the key on).

Another easy way to confirm a fuel problem is to disconnect the intake tube somewhere and inject propane (from an unlit propane torch) while someone cranks. If it's a fuel issue, it should start and run relatively normally, with the propane.
