Dazed Odometer and Speedometers Issues

Hi,

I have a '93 SC2 5sp w/~100k

A few days ago I notice the following:

1. The odometer continuously turns, then stops completely for a minute or so, then turns continuously. The result is that a 5 mile drive is recorded as a ~30 mile drive.

2. The speedometer is intermittently erratic at freeway speeds (above 60 mph). It reads correctly at lower speeds. On the freeway the needle will swing back and forth from ~60 to ~80, then read correctly/steady for a few moments then back to erratic.

About 1 1/2 years ago I replaced the odometers gears with ones from a junkyard because the odometer had stopped working completely. The odometer has worked accurately until now. I wouldn't think a broken gear wheel would cause it to turn continuously, rather it would simply stopped altogether.

Any advice on the culprit (VSS, Cluster part, etc.) would be appreciated.

Thanks.

Sounds like issues with the odometer motor/and/or gears. The speedometer reads the speed via electrical impulses via the electrical circuit film that attaches to the instrument cluster itself.

What is the status of your electrical system as well?

Post Re: Odometer and Speedometers Issues

The electrical system, as far as I can tell, is fully functional. I have replaced both the battery and alternator about a year ago.

Since both problems (Speedometer and Odometer) presented at the same time, it makes sense that both are the effect of a single cause.

Hopefully this is is a known problem (eg., ETCS) and has a ready solution.

Question Re: Odometer and Speedometers Issues

Any advice on what, and how, I can check for the problem?

I don't have a plan of action, other than to pull a cluster (if I can find one) from a junkyard and hope for the best.

My guess would be that the Odometer motor has failed and the circuit film on te back of the cluster has come loose, or the contact points that send impulses to the speedometer have become dirty.

Even if you pull the dash out of a JY car- there is no guarantee that the JY dash odometer and speedometer would work.

Just throwing this out there- why not pull your current dash and see if there is something loose or broken first before making a trip to the yard, at least you wouldn't be spending the money on a JY part and gas getting there if your current setup just needs to be checked/cleaned.

whatever you do, don't waste time pulling clusters out of yards to try to find a good gear. you can buy new gears on ebay that are well worth the money. if you are lucky enough to find an unbroken original gear in a junkyard, it won't last long anyway because it's already brittle. it's a colossal waste of time. as stated above, take yours apart, and if it is the gear or gears, replace them. if the gears are ok, you may have a speed sensor problem or possible faulty speedometer/odometer board.
