1997 SC2
Default '97 SC2 1.9 Liter I-4 fuel filter inquiry

I have a '97 SC2 with only 57,000 actual miles on it. I am about to drive it across it the country from Oregon to New York. It is in excellent mechanical condition, but my brother (who is a gearhead) said I should get the fuel filter replaced ASAP before I leave on my trip- because I'll be filling up very often at gas stations all over hell's half acre. Where is the fuel filter on this car, and is it easily replaceable? Can I get it at my local Autozone or other place?

REWARD EXCELLENCE!

follow the fuel line from the fuel rail - it makes a 90 degree turn downwards then another 90 degree turn horizontally under the steering wheel - the filter is right there under the steering wheel (or under the driver's side firewall is maybe a better way to describe it).

It's pretty easy. All you need to do is pinch the quick connect things to get it off. It's easier to get at the lower connector by taking off the driver's side wheel and splash guards.

I'll find links to other descriptions. There are no videos or illustrated instructions for our year unfortunately.

Yeah you can get it anywhere for like $10-15.

Here's a video of a how-to. I'm not sure on the actual filter though. I was going to pick one up from rockauto.com so I can get the bracket with the filter when I change mine next week.

Hope it helps. Seems simple enough.

Edit: Sorry, didn't see the post prior to mine in time. Yeah, that reminded me that there are some differences with the 1997 models than the rest of the gen 2 series.

Every fill up, or at least every other fill up, let your car sit 5~10 minutes (stretch your legs, use the restroom, etc). Then check your oil and get it right to the top of the Full mark, or just a touch over.

Even if you are not burning any oil normally with such low miles, you will be spending a lot of time at around 3k rpm or higher. Wouldn't hurt to keep a couple of quarts in the trunk

...Wait, what, I actually won that eBay auction?
Guess I now (12/2008) own a 1998 SL2, silver 5 spd :p
And now (7/2010), a Craigslist 1997 SC2 5 spd
