Default Fuel cap loose code after changing fuel pump

I recently changed the fuel pump on my 2001 LW200 and now I keep getting the code that says my fuel cap is not tight. I realize that it is most likely that I left something loose when I did the fuel pump, but is it possible the cap is bad? If so, is there a way I can check it?

Other thoughts or places to start before lowering the tank?

I am getting the same thing! I am going to reset my code this week to see if it was the gas cap. If it comes back on my next step is going to be to snag a gas cap from the junkyard and hope it stops throwing the code. If not it may be time to pull the tank again... I keep smelling gas too but not constantly so I'm curious if it is my car. Do you smell gas fumes when driving?

It sounds like there is not the proper air lock with the venting. I just had a piece of vent pipe in the back replaced because it had rusted through. Something is letting air in and fumes out.
