Default Ticking/licking Noise Under Hood

I have a 2007 FWD Saturn Outlook. I've noticed after a few minutes of the enginer running a clicking/ticking noise starts. I put a screw driver on top of each of the front 3 the solenoids and I couldn't hear anything. I noticed the noise more prevelent towards the driver side of the engine, but towards the back as I was checking the front. I saw a connector that seems to have a hose or some type of line going to the air intake and I listened with the screw driver on this connector and it definitely made the clicking/ticking very prevelent. This connector seems to be part of a fuel line but this would be the first time I've seen the air/fuel mixing occuring here in an engine. Any ideas what this connector is or why the clicking/ticking would be coming from it?

The device with the screw driver blade touching it in your photo is the evap canister purge solenoid.

Thank you! DO you know if it is supports to be making any ticking sounds as it operates? I didn't think this would be a device that would be cycling as often as it is but I dont' know enough about the device to know for sure.

Interestingly enough, I had a transmission issue this past weekend. We were experiencing some high engine revving while driving and noticed some jerking in between the revs. The SES light while heading home and the transmission fully disengaged. Engine seemed to continue puring along just fine, but none of the gears worked. Several minutes later the transmission did engaged, but the vehicle wasn't driven out of concern for enginer or further transmission damage. My wife mentioned to me she noticed some hesitation/jerking while going in reverse a few days ago as well.

I've read several other forums regarding multiple TSBs on the 35R clutch plate so I am not looking forward to this but I am wondering if the clicking could have been a warning for what happened (prpbably not).

Good news from the dealership service department yesterday was that the transmission issue is a "silent recall" item that GM is covering. Additional comments were that there was a confirmed bad batch of waveplates that were not sealing properly and failing under stress and there was nothing that I could have done to prevent it.

I'm frustrated that this happend to a car with 54K miles but I am glad that GM has been sensible on this one and the dealership was quick to respond! Should have the car back in 3 days.

Hopefully I will hear back on the evap cansiter valve.

First of all I'm not a mechanic. All I can say is that device doesn't make any audible clicking sounds on my 2007 Outlook. You might want to point out the noise to your mechanic and get an expert opinion.

Thanks, I agree. Here's the update.

The dealership was able to repair the trans but a few gears and pistons were replaced as well. It seemed like a bigger issue than maybe GM has let on or there was subsequent damage. The tech mentioned that the wave plate was fractured but pieces were not separated so I don't know. I couldn't get a clear story here.

As far as the evap canister valve, the tech said that it appears to be a "normal" condition as he has seen other people in with the same question. He could not reference any particular bulliten, however.

I've researched complaints on other vehicles and the vast majority of people indicated that it should not be cycling at a high frequency but they have also noted that it may not be a fault valve so I'll keep researching it and see what I can find out.

Thanks for the feebdack so far!

Thumbs Up Re: Ticking/licking Noise Under Hood

Thanks for the thread good to hear about this 'silent recall' !!

"..tech said that it appears to be a "normal" condition as he has seen other people in with the same question..."

Ya would think 'normal' would be if something wasn't making that noise from day one but waaaay later, there has been or is going to be failure of component and should be replaced by the manufacturer (under the basic or powertrain warranty) as 'normal' correction/repair !!?
