Least effective way is to assume it hasn't been messed with so a SOHC will have a MP2 and a DOHC will have an MP3. '98-'02 MP2's have the longest 5th gear if mileage is what you want.

Between the top transmission mounting bolts (on the bell housing) and down an inch or so, clean all the grime off and it'll say MP2 or MP3 (MP6 or MP7 for the odd looking paperweights). It's hard to read as it's a dot matrix print, but it's there. I know a couple people have posted a picture of exactly what/where to look but I can't remember who.

Only need the 5spd shifter boot, not the whole console. Doesn't matter what model it's from as long as it's from the same generation as your center console.

From the junkyard: Transmission, PCM, shifter, shift cables, shifter boot, shift knob, clutch hydrolics, clutch pedal, brake pedal, clutch fork and all related hardware (nuts, bolts, clips).

New from the autoparts store: Flywheel, clutch disc, pressure plate, release bearing.

A MP2 will be attached to a SOHC engine and a MP3 will be attached to a DOHC engine. Also the second, third and fourth digits on the transmission id code will indicate what transmission it is. It will say MP2 or MP3 for a manual or MP6 or MP7 for an automatic.
