There are no bolt ones for proformance on these cars.

Cold air intake, chips, mufflers, nothing will help.

You want more power, buy a v6 or v8 car. Heck the sc2 DOHC.

The SOHC's always going to be slow. You could swap for the DOHC, but it's often recommended to just swap the whole car instead. Or, leave the SC1 alone & enjoy the fuel economy, and pick up a better car to mod.

There are some bolt-ons, but they will do very little to help performance. And 99% of "e-turbo's", "electric superchargers", and the like are crap. Any that isn't are going to cost a pretty penny.

But true. We own a SOHC car and I wouldn't waste any money expecting a performance return. If you feel it's worth it to mod for sound or looks with little performance expectation then that is your choice of course.

I'll laugh back at them at the gas pump.

If you really want to improve something on the car why not try and get even better MPG, mods for mpg are abudent I think.

One way to enhance your performance would be to modify your power to weight ratio. Take anything that you really don't need in the car and get rid of it. Lightening up the car will enable it to go faster than it already does and it doesn't cost much money. The reason everyone here is so biased against the SOHC engine is that with serious modification it may reach or just barely exceed the performance of the DOHC engine, and since an engine swap is not that difficult, that would be their first recommendation. But if you are looking for something easy you can do, start stripping the car bare, as every pound will add up in the end.

Oh yes it is (and the body definitely is not metal)!

"Technically, all Corvettes since 1973 have used SMC body panels, but the material composition has changed dramatically, featuring less traditional fiberglass and more lightweight plastic. The early SMC material created parts that were stronger and more rigid, but more brittle. As SMC technology and production experience evolved, Corvette engineers were able to alter the material composition and the body parts' specifications in order to trim the car's curb weight--an endeavor that was certainly welcomed though the later C3 years, as engine output kept eroding. Mostly, that meant making thinner body panels, because SMC was denser and stronger than conventional fiberglass.

The assembly-plant changeover from St. Louis to Bowling Green in 1981 brought a switch to a more plastic-infused formula for the SMC body panels. Published figures vary, so without the capability to weigh both factory-stock '80 and '81 models, it's difficult to provide an accurate comparison of the weight differences between traditional fiberglass and SMC-bodied cars. From the numbers we researched, it appears the '81s were about 100 pounds lighter than their '80 counterparts. That's not all attributable to the SMC bodywork, however, since the change to a fiberglass mono-leaf rear spring for '81 accounted for about a 35-pound reduction. Nevertheless, newly formulated body panels helped lighten the Corvette--and it was the same basic formula used throughout the C4 generation.
