Idea Lights and their 'Functions'

I'm still a little confused about the purpose of a few of the factory head-lights.

Attached is a picture of the front headlight assembly, with numbers 1-5.

Here's what I know:

1: Highbeams...only come on when light stick is pulled in.
2: Lowbeams/Daytime Running Lights...possible to turn off?
3: Signal and...?
4: What purpose does this have? When is it on?
5: Fog lights, only come on when button is pushed.

Also attached is the light stick on my column.

Basically what I would like to know is a (owners manual) description of what each light does, when each turns on, and what I really don't need.

Example; I'm doing my corner markers black this weekend...but can i just pull the bulbs so no amber shows through? Do I need them? Do they serve a legal or functioning purpose?

Thanks,

Ty

I've been debating about the DRL's and not sure of the entire wiring of them. It could be as simple as removing the DRL relay under the hood. As for #4, that is the sidemarker lamp. As far as I know, by law, every vehicle has to have an operational amber sidemarker lamp illuminated in the front in low light; some vehicles use them as a marker and turn signal, other vehicles have a separate turn signal. My Rav4 is has a marker lamp and a separate turn signal.
To see what each does, just turn the ignition on without starting the truck and play around with the signal stalk. See what comes on and when.

As for the stalk inside:
Auto: turns the headlights on when the sensor on the dash detects a low level of outside light. When I park in the garage, the headlights will come on but when I exit the garage and it is daylight out, the sensor will see that and it takes roughly 30 seconds (I cannot remember what the manual says) for it to shut the lights off and turn on the DRL's. This will turn the headlights on/off depending on the light outside.
#2: turn on parking lights only (not sure if you can illuminate the fog/driving lamps too).
#3: turn on the headlights manually.

1) High beams - bull back on the turn signal stalk to turn on/off and for flashing during daytime use without headlights on.
2) Low beams - double as Daytime Running Lights - unplug DRL resistor/fuse/relay to disable - use a resistor in the light sensor socket located on the passenger side of the top dash pad near the corner of the windshield to disable Auto headlights.
3) Turn signal and parking light
4) Parking light only - comes on with all other exterior lights - elimination can be done by taking out the bulb, but you may want to check local laws regarding parking lights. If the bulb is removed, there will be NO side marker light near the front of the vehicle, which is usually required by law.
5) Fog lights - can be used with headlights and/or parking lights when the button on the dash is pushed. When headlight switch is turned on manually, they will work with position 2 and 3 of your switch picture.

The parking brake - apply at least 1 click to turn off DRLs. If parking brake is applied at night when the vehicle is started, the automatic headlights will not come on until the parking brake is released. NOTE: applying parking brake during normal driving to turn off DRL can result in your rear brakes becoming overheated, and result in lower fuel economy. NOT ADVISABLE.

Switch:
1) Automatic setting - headlights turn on automatically in low light situations.
2) Parking lights - can be used when the auto headlights sense it's too bright for headlight activation.
3) Headlights - can be used when auto headlights sense it's too bright for headlight activation - during rain/snow/funeral etc.

Thanks everyone.

I guess my questions is:

Do I/Why do I need both DRL's and side markers?

As I am getting HIDs, I don't want DRL's...

Though I could just use my fogs for DRL's if I eliminate both my low beam drls and my side markers...

Some areas (Canada) require DRLs, for sure. Side marker lights might not be a big deal there, but they are here in Pennsylvania. Heck, even the side "headlights" typically found on Cadillacs for turn signals are even required for PA state inspection.

As for your question "Do I/Why do I need both DRLs and side markers?" Well... DRLs are only really seen from the front of the vehicle (theoretically), while side markers are seen from... the side...

A lot of newer vehicles can forgo side markers because of the shape of the headlights that wrap around the corner. One bulb can act as front parking and side marker.

Oh ok, that makes sense.

So my best bet would be to install my HIDs,

And either run the fogs as drls while having my

Switch turned to the park light (2) position,

Or: remove whatever it is that makes my low beams

Run at reduced power, and leave them running in the

Auto position.

As for side markers, if it's ambiguous, I'll just remove the

Bulbs. Should be fine.

Thanks everyone!

Pull the DRL relay in the under hood fuse box. That will get rid of them, as for the auto head lights, I don't know how to disable it on the Vue. Other vehicles like my Silverado and Corvette have a disable for them.

I read a post a while back that talked about using a resistor (from Radio Shack) in the plug that connects to the AHL sensor on the dash. That appears to keep them from turning on automatically.

So is everyone in agreeance that pulling the DRL fuse will eliminate them?

Worse case scenario, I use my fogs as DRL's.

I'll try it out this afternoon and see if pulling the DRL fuse fixes my problems,

or if I need a resistor/relay/etc.

Thanks everyone.

It was the relay, not fuse in my '05 RL. I have had it like this for 2 years now w/o a problem.

So I pull the relay, not the fuse?

And where is this located exactly?

If anyone has pictures or diagrams,

that would be great.

Ok found it, sorry for wasting anyone's time, it was pretty obvious once I cracked open the fuse box.

Another questions, however-

Since removing it disables ALL my lights while running, is there any one of the prongs(30, 85, 86, 87) that i can remove just for the low beams, while leaving my other lights (corner markers, etc) intact?

I saw someone do it on an S series, not sure if its doable on the Vue.

It would be nice to have SOME lights on during the day (I'm from Canada).

Thanks,

Ty

DRLs only activate the low beams. I'm not sure what other lights you're referring to...

Under normal DRL function, you won't have any. Unless GM did something wonky for Canadian models, DRLs turn on only the headlights (low beam) at reduced power. No other lights come on under normal DRL function.

If you have no lights when you turn on the headlights manually using the switch, then I'd say there's a problem.

Idea Re: Lights and their 'Functions'

Oh I have lights when turning the switch (see photos!), but before when the switch was on AUTO during the daytime, I had all 3 of the 'outside' lights lit up (2,3,4 on my diagram).

Maybe Canadia is CRAZY!

Either way, it would be good to have SOMETHING lit up on the front during the day,
as I'm legally obliged to have corner markers at all times (looked it up).

Anyway, here's the lights!

Considering there is snow on the windshield in these pictures, I'm going to bet the auto headlights are actually on, and not the DRLs. DRLs only activate when you move the gearshift out of park and the parking brake is NOT set.

To test: put into any gear. The DRLs will light up, along with the green light on the instrument cluster. If the DRL resistor or fuse/relay is pulled, the green light will flash a few times and go out, signaling a problem with the DRL system.

An easy way to see what lights come on with the DRL system functioning would be to pull up to the building behind your Vue in the pics... you'll see what lights are on when DRL is activated... providing it's not dark enough for your auto headlights to come on.

Great tip, I'll give that a try,

though I have never had a green DRL light on my dash at any time before...

Tried it out, checking in the reflection of the glass while in gear, no park break, and there are no lights....but you're saying THIS isn't suprising, but the fact I had all 3 lights running BEFORE is suprising?

Thanks,

And yes, the pics before were with the headlights turned to on (position 3 on my diagram).
