Four or six cylinder?

If V6 - bank 1, sensor 1 would be nearest dash and before catalytic converter.

If 4-cyl - would be sensor before cat.

Might be able to provide an illustration if you post engine.

O2 sensors are almost always user replaceable, but change is easier might be easier using a sensor socket.

alram - copy that - I was trying to edit mine too.

The attachment mentions bank 1, sensor 2 but if you look at drawing - go to item number 1. I can find a better drawing if it'll be less confusing.

Darn ... see if this attachment makes any more sense.

I also attached a drawing for special sensor tool - they're available at most auto parts stores.

By the way...they sell cheap 4 wire universal sensors, can I use it?
looks like mine is a 5 wire (very expensive), what's the difference?.
Can you explain or direct me to where I can learn about it?
Thanks again
Al

I've used inexpensive sensors and they often outlast the warranty, but not always.

Upstream (Sensor 1) sensors can be twice as expensive as downstream (Sensor 2) because they lead an active life.

I just checked at RockAuto.com - one of my favorite INTERNET parts places - and they have one brand sensor for $80 - plus shipping and the next higher quality is $120.

Many universals will require you to splice wiring to reuse the existing engine wiring connectors. Splicing can be safely done - I'm an expert with 50 years aircraft experience - and I choose to not splice sensor wiring.

I splice wires before but I always use solder. The splice will add a little bit of impedance to the line but I wonder if is enough to affect the operation of the sensor.
How about the difference between 4 and 5 wires? at this point I think is more important to me to know the difference.

alram ... see attached sensor schematic extracted from service manual. The upstream sensor (1) has seven wires and downstream (2) has four.

Make sure you're looking at correct replacement device.

Yea, definitely do not splice a universal in, the splice will eventually fail. Either solder the universal connector on or just pay the price for the OEM style. Personally, I find the OEM is worth it. You can change the sensor with OEM in about 15 minutes without much more effort than to simply plug the new connector in.

Do you happen to have a diagram for the O2 sensor locations on a 2008 Saturn Vue XR with a 3.6L engine?

I've been looking all over the internet and have found more info on these forums than anywhere else.

Thank you.

I've attached two service manual extracts for 3.6 bank 1 and bank 2 HO2S sensors.

Bank 1 is three cylinders nearest the firewall (windshield) side of engine and sensor 1 is before (upstream) catalytic converter and sensor 2 (downstream) is after.

Bank 2 is nearest radiator - sensor 1 before cat - sensor 2 - after cat.

These are rough extracts - sensor replacement files are more informative but are too large to post - I'll email if you PM address (left click on my screen name).
