Default 2000 Saturn SL1 wont start

Hi,

I have a 2000 Saturn SL1, it has 143,000 miles on it. A few days ago it decided not to start. I put my key in and go to start the car and nothing happens. The lights go on in the dash but no clicking or sounds occur. I'm assuming its not a battery problem or starter since there is no clicking and power goes on but i'm not sure. I've had suggestions of replacing the ignition switch. What do you think? Is this a costly complicated repair or something I could possibly do myself.

Thanks in advance.

REWARD EXCELLENCE!

If you get everything to turn over and there's a really flat whine without ticking, your timing chain is off. If that's the case, you better hope it slipped while sitting or only a few degrees, Saturn runs an interference motor, so there's a good chance if that's the case your valves are smashed, and cylinders damaged. Unlikely, but that's the sound my car made when I found it.

The other reason I can remember is the CKP sensor could be bad, it'll keep a Saturn from starting.

If your engine isn't even turning over, I would think that'd be electrical or ignition related.

There is no whining sound or anything. I also forgot to mention this happened about six months ago, after trying to start it over 20 times it finally started but not sure why or how.

Never assume anything unless you're well experienced in car mechanics.

The instrument panel display in general only tells you there's enough battery to power the car's electrical system. Whether it has power to run a starter is where questions begins.

If the battery is over 4yrs old then it may not have power to run a starter. Have it tested by any auto store selling batteries. A starter that's worn out will give many different symptoms to the inexperienced. To test for a worn out starter can be as easy as banging it a few times with a piece of 2x4 against the body for one more try - a start means the starter is worn out.

If you haven't had any success thus far, it's important to ask, is there compression in the motor?

You may also want to remove the plugs/wires (noting firing order) and turn the crankshaft pulley by hand, using a breaker bar. turn it CLOCKWISE. if it turns freely you're fine. if there's resistance (especially LOADS of it), the engine is seized.

and a CPS issue would result in a crank no start condition (unless you get a rare double whammy of the starter "heat stroke").

If the battery is fine, and whacking the starter doesn't help, I'd remove the starter and have it tested. Some auto parts stores will do this. A good step to take before doing anything major. While you're under there, make sure the terminal rings on the starter aren't loose or majorly corroded.
