Default DRL only work sometimes....

DRL (daytime running lights) only work some of the time.

Light switch is on auto.

Kinda random, I usually don't notice; but my sister was driving on a section of road that required lights on at all times and got pulled over for no lights.......

Don't have a clue where to start to debug problem.

Being inattentive to driving lights is one thing when all it takes is simply pointing the front against the back of anything; another car, wall, fence, etc., to attempt seeing the reflection of one's headlights. A person can always step out of the car to check for headlights if in doubt..........and turn them on manually.

I wondered when people will become complacent with DRL's............

My nephew insists on carrying a huge sound system in the rear of his car so he removed his spare tire. Guess who he called to bring his spare when a flat happpened?

Daytime running lights depends on several circuits and one of them is the photocell covered with a round shaded lens on top of the dash. Is this covered or broken? Next is the DRL relay that can be swapped with another one nearby. The last would be the parking brake lever if left one detent before a full release - the p-brake switch is used as part of DRL controls. The only thing to disable DRL's completely and easily is for one headlight to burn out. If your DRL's use high beams during the day and one lamp burns out, the DRL circuit would blink the DRL indicator several times then stay off. At night, if one low beam lamp burned out the DRL circuit wouldn't work but should turn on the remaining lamp. If the light switch were turned to the first detent, side marker lights, then the DRL circuits are bypassed altogether and no low beams are turned on until the light switch is turned to the second detent to turn them on.

DRL's don't fail as they cannot control a burned out lamp. Depending on DRL's for everyday use is one thing but there will always be a manual mode to over ride automatic controls that some forget to use when needed.

Hmmmmmmm

Parking pass placards are sometimes randomly on top of the dash.....

Hope that's the simple solution.

I can't make a case for a covered auto light sensor. If covered - AHL will be ON when ignition is on ... assuming lighting switch is to AUTO.

A total absence of lights (when other conditions are met) indicates the AHL circuit is satisfied with lighting level and something is flaky with DRL circuit.

Fdryer mentions the usual suspects and you could advise sister to monitor the green DRL indicator. If its on - DRL should be on. If DRL indicator blinks, it could be an intermittent lamp, resistor or interconnecting wiring.
