It's which ever comes first. Over time, the additives get less effective. Change,it, and use dexcool, not.the.green stuff.

So I'm a little over 8 years of new ownership (9 years out of Factory) approaching 98,000 miles with Winter coming on. Last I checked still got good Freeze protection range and looks "clean".

Guess I'm about 4 years overdue for a Drain/Fill.

Any Quick tips for the Weekend DIYer?

Does the ION's radiator have a reliable pitcock drain value or are most just removing/replacing the Lower Radiator Hose? (Think people have been leaning to the Radiator Hose)

Think the manual suggests 50/50 up to 60/40 (70/30?) Dexcool?

Might be a good time to double check my Mom's Equinox Radiator... The 2005 had plenty of Radiator/Dexcool related issues early on. Some "fresh" Coolant for the Winter might be a good idea... regardless.

I've used the drain valve without any issues. It's on the lower passanger side corner of the radiator.

Drain it, fill and run it with water 3 times, or until the water comes out clear, then fill with 50/50

Are the Peak or Prestone All Makes/All Models (widely available and believed to be dexclones) acceptable alternatives to genuine Dexcool?

No ONLY DEXCOOL, and you can't go by the color. Mopar has HOAT coolant which is orange, dexcool is OAT.

Have an open bottle of Zerex 50/50 DEXCOOL... So will probably buy more of that. I like the bar graph on that bottle that visually confirms what you should be using in most vehicles... (No one size fits all fluids listed for any of them.)

Most Owner Manuals suggest if you "blend" your DEXCOOL with the "Green stuff" you should change it back to DEXCOOL to provide the needed protection.

So check your manual and read the Bottle carefully. Look for approval as a DEXCOOL coolant.

5 years.
Do not mix Dexcool w/ other coolants.
Over time Dexcool "gums" so even if it looks good there is an issue.

Also a big recommendation to use distilled water w/ the coolant mix.

That was kind of the problem with my Mom's 2005 Equinox the Coolant got sludgy/muddy looking very early on. (Not 100,000/ 5 Years later) Required GM to flush/fill/treat with additive.

Not sure your specific DEXCOOL concerns are still an issue. (Thought during the original introduction the formula reacted poorly with some systems... adjustments were made?) If it looks "clean" it should last the Interval suggested in in the Owner's Manual.

So no short (better safe then sorry) 3 year/36,000 change intervals needed... unless conditions warrant.
