Default sunroof operation question

on a saturn sunroof (i got a 2001 sc2) i know the motor has a limiting switch & when ya use the vent position on the switch the top lifts & then the motor stops, but when ya hold down the switch all the way the roof rolls open all the way. my question is when the roof gets to the end of it's travel does the moor cut off or is it still getting current if you keep holding down the switch? the same when the top closes all the way does the motor get cut off or is it still getting current if you still hold down the switch?

a lot of people fixed their own sunroofs here so someone must know this...

i'm just trying tio understand why a sunroof which was hardly used over it's lifetime would suddenly cause the motor gears to strip & the roof inoperational. according to the garage the rest of the roof was fine just stripped motor gears. i had them install the sunroof doctor's kit while apart, but why did the gears strip? i know their plastic, but others last a long time before this happens. i was thinking maybe when i open the roof all the say i hold down the button too long after the top stops & also while it closes unless the motor is automatically cut off by it's micro limiting switch then it doesn't matter.....

Well the simple answer is that some of the parts in the Saturn sunroof are just junk, the plastic gears being an obvious weakness. I would assume due to lack of frequent lubrication, extra strain was put on the gears, causing them to strip.

It's like a car that sits a lot. Vs. one that doesn't.
Which would you rather have?

Mechanical things are meant to be used.

i wonder if a new motor has metal gears. maybe they were updated after 11 years of stripped plastic gears?
