2009 Astra XE
Sad P2096 code

Well, isn't it funny how you always seem to have car trouble at the most inopportune times. I had left California to make my way back to Texas after vacation, and when I got in Vegas (passing through) the check engine light came on. So I swung by an autozone to get it read. They came out with a p2096 code and suggested it could be a sensor malfunction, however he highly suggested that I get it looked at before continuing on. But since it was 5:00 on a saturday of a holliday weekend, no service places were open and probably wouldn't be until tuesday. I probably could have found a small service shop to take a look, however they probably would have had no clue and would have had to wait until Chevy opened to get parts. So I thought, I will just go on and see how it goes, however upon getting on the highway the car is really having issues with acceleration and power. I don't want to force it for fear of burning up a piston.

Any thoughts on what it could be or if it would be dangerous to keep driving. I made it to Arizona tonight (kingman), however I have quite the drive ahead of me. I am going to break it up into two days and probably take it quite slow, but just wanted to see what the more knowledgable members think. Hopefully someone will glance at this post before I leave tomorrow morning, but if not I will be checking in at McD's along the way (free wifi).
Thanks for any advice you may have!!

Never leave Autozone telling you what they see on their readers. Either ask them for the entire readout or insist on reading the error code yourself so you have all the info.

P2086 Post Catalyst Fuel Trim System Low Limit

There are many posts on other forums outside Saturnfans that seem to point to mods done like "foulers", poor/loose connections, exhaust system leak, worn out rear O2 sensor, damaged catalytic converter. Resetting the error is the first try and the error code coming back means more troubleshooting.

A blocked catcon may be possible. Not posting mileage or any other pertinent info prolongs feedback.

Hey fdryer,
I did actually get the readout from them, however didn't get the code reset. Probably should of said that.

I appologize for not including the extra info, I don't know how that slipped by me. It's an 09 XE 4dr, manual trans, with approx 50,000km (maybe 30,000miles). I'm the original owner, and no other repairs or mods have been done to it except for fm transmitter.

Thanks!

DTC Descriptors

DTC P2096

Post Catalyst Fuel Trim System Low Limit

Circuit/System Description

The engine control module (ECM) controls the air/fuel metering system in order to provide the best possible combination of driveability, fuel economy, and emission control. Fuel delivery is controlled differently during Open Loop and Closed Loop (CL). During Open Loop, the ECM determines fuel delivery based on sensor signals without heated oxygen sensor (HO2S) input. During CL, the ECM adds HO2S inputs and level of purge to calculate the short and long term fuel trim (FT) adjustments. If the HO2S indicates a lean condition, the FT values will be above 0 percent. If the HO2S indicates a rich condition, the FT values will be below 0 percent. The short term FT values change rapidly in response to the HO2S voltage signals. The long term FT makes coarse adjustments in order to maintain an air/fuel ratio of 14.7:1.

Dam, that sucks bro, i hope you get it repaired or cleared so you can make it back home safe.

i think we should all show up at the Munday Chevy Dealership and give them our cars(im having issues with mine, lose of power during acceleration and valves tapping like a SOB) and see if they will actually fix our problems. They dint fix mine the first time i took it too them, but its still doing it.

Mines throwing out Cam Sensor Code and it pissing me off that it hasnt been fixed.

Hey guys, thanks for all the input on this. I am made it all the way back to Texas without any further problems. The day after I had the issues, I had no more major troubles with the car. At times, it did seems like it had slightly less power than normal, but it could have been my mind seeing what it wanted to. The light is still on though, so I will have to bring it in to get it turned off/checked out. I haven't had any major servicing at my local dealer yet, so I will see how it goes. Usually services in general are better outside of newfoundland (my home province), but in this instance it would be better if I was there since all the techs that worked at Saturn have moved to the chevy dealer.

Is this your local saturn service agent where you are in Houston? It sucks that you are still having trouble. Hopefully my local place will do better, but we'll see. :-)

yes, that is the Northside Dealership that covers Saturns. im going to check, there is suppose to be one in Pasadena on 225 and beltway, but i have to call them and see if they do saturns as well.

Keep me up to date Newf, maybe we both can bombard Munday Chevy and give them a run for the money, lol.

Will do! Although I'm not sure that they will give me a courtesy ride to work at A&M.

Its errors like these that make me want to buy those bluetooth ODB scan tools that I can connect to with my phone. It would be easy to identify if you are getting odd voltages from the downstream O2 sensor, and replace it based on the info it provided.

i have gone to the step of barrow my dads ODB Cable box, and hook it too my Netbook. i run EasyODB software(i paid the 20 bucks for the commerical) and found i had a Cam Sensor flakin out. ive been driving to work and home the past couple of days and havent had one issue(been using the a/c as well, figure only would do it when a load was on) and i havent had one problem. i still think i have a cam sensor or sensors going out, but im waiting for that dam engine code to pop back up and when it does, its getting taken back to Munday Chevy. Bring backs are not good for service, so im gona be straight forward this go around.

If nothing gets taken care of, looks like the BBB, Newpapers, and News will be getting involved if i have too.
