Default Muffler hanging in the rear

Hi Folks,

I have the back portion of the muffler (the big box) hanging.
the piece of metal that attached the muffler to the car has rusted away.
It rusted on the muffler side, so I was thinking of getting a metal strap to tie up the muffler to whatever is left of the metal piece.
Has this happened to anyone and how did you solve it?

On the right side you can see the pice of metal that is also part of the strap.
it looks like I could use a flex strap or something there?
Opinions please?

Its not the band... well part of it... But how do I replace the top part, the one visible on the picture?

By replacing the band as your has rusted through.
The walker one on RockAuto says it doesn't work with the stock muffler, try NAPA or AdvanceAuto.

I will check, but how do I replace that metal piece on the picture?? Does it come apart somehow?
Is there a DIY somewhere??

The metal piece in the picture should slide out of the rubber bumper attached to the car. I had the same problem and I still haven't fixed it. Here are some part numbers and prices I looked up in February:

saturnfans.com/forum/showthread.php?p=1714235#post1714235

Assuming you have the stock muffler:

Muffler Strap 21006860 was special order for $18.05 from GM Parts Direct plus $12.95 for S&H. The L bracket "Hanger" 21013041 was also special order from GM Parts Direct for $2.60 each, but you had to purchase them in packs of 5 for $13.00 plus $3.12 S&H. Not really a good deal. The GMPartsDepartment site had the strap for around $32.00 and the L bracket was around $5.00 for one I think. I haven't checked it out recently though.

When I fix the problem, I plan on going with the dealer. I've had good luck with MACK Buick GMC in Ann Arbor for Saturn parts so I'll check there. I expect the repair to run $30-$40.

Good Luck,

Bill

How does it slide out? Does the metal piece splits in two?
I need to have it fixed asap because I have to drive to work.

Does the flat metal piece move? On my 02 SL2, it slid out of the rubber insert in the metal bracket that is attached to the car. I drew some arrows on your picture to indicate this. It looks like you need a new muffler strap 21006860 and a new muffler hanger 21013041.

GM Parts direct has them listed at $31.05 for the strap and $4.33 for the hanger.

Once you have the new parts, the hanger should slide right back into the rubber insert and the strap should fit around the muffler and then bolt to the hanger.

Does anyone have a picture of this assembled? I haven't gotten around to actually doing the repair yet.

Anyone who struggles with how to properly hang a muffler needs to take the vehicle to the muffler shop and pay someone to do it.

Well carquest seems to have the part for $20CAD.
I managed to take out the existing hanger... what a pain that was to remove.
I had to cut the strap, couldnt unscrew it at all, and because it was very awakard it took me awhile to split the top piece to be able to remove it from the rubber case.

Now get the part and install it, hopefully it will be easier.

Glad you got it removed! What part does Carquest have for $20? Is it part number 8087?

I am sorry if I am not a certified mechanic and Im only trying to learn how its done properly so I dont have to take to a shop and pay someone else to do it.

I believe I tried that strap with my stock muffler and it did not fit. According to RockAuto.com, it does not fit the O.E. It fits Walker muffler 54251. Did you buy/order the part yet?

See post #9. I recommend finding a good GM dealer near you or order from the site I mentioned.
