I have a friend that wants to replace the serpentine belt on a 98 SW2.
The location of the tensioner makes it almost impossible to reach with a standard length wrench. I want to buy a real long wrench to move the tensioner (assuming I just have to move the tensioner with the wrench to loosen the belt). I just don't know what size wrench I should buy?? Can anyone tell me if this is the right method, and what size wrench I should buy??

OEM 14mm. Many aftermarkets are 15mm. You can tie a piece of clothesline cord to the end of any combination wrench to get the leverage you need to wind up the tensioner from above.

I found it easier to remove the rt frnt tire, splash-guards and get to the tensioner from below (using standard length wrench). Guess I am not coordinated enough to get to it from above
![]() I use my left hand to rotate the tensioner and right hand to lift it off the AC pulley ... ...Wait, what, I actually won that eBay auction? Guess I now (12/2008) own a 1998 SL2, silver 5 spd :p And now (7/2010), a Craigslist 1997 SC2 5 spd

I've done it both ways, but removing the wheel seems much easier to me.

I had my serpentine belt off just yesterday. A standard 14mm box end wrench works. Access it through the right hand wheel well as alordofchaos said.
Remove the wheel and front access panel. Feel up and to the left of the harmonic balancer. Using the wrench remove the tension (rotate the tensioner pulley bolt clockwise) and slip the belt off the balancer first (personally I find it easier than reaching the A/C pulley, but that will work too Takes about 10 minutes. Very easy to do. Be sure to use a jack stand of course. ... DIYguy Condemnant quod non intellegunt..... 97SC2 Saturn, Cruze Eco, Chevy SS P/U, Honda CT200, Honda VT1100C
