Roll Eyes 2000 Saturn SL1 High Idle

I have a 2000 Saturn SL1 that just recently started idling high (around 3000 RPM). Someone mentioned to me checking the idle screw... Not sure if this car has one, or if that is even a possible solution.

Any help or suggestions is greatly appreciated!

-Mike

There is no idle screw. Idle is set by a solenoid controlled by the PCM.

Most common high-idle cause on a third-generation SOHC engine is a vacuum leak via the intake manifold gasket. Characteristic flaw. Start the engine and spray something like brake cleaner along the joint between the intake manifold and the cylinder head. If the "idle" changes, that indicates it's sucking in the sprayed substance through the leak. IM gasket replacement is the fix. Doable "in-frame", with hand tools.

Thank you very much for your reply! I'm not a mechanic; do you think this is something I should even attempt on my own?

Thanks again.

most of the people on here aren't mechanics either, and i'm definitely NOT one, but I can tell you that changing the intake manifold gasket is a daunting, but simple, task. I just did mine one week ago. The biggest key is to make sure you have all the needed parts and tools to make the job easy. THIS thread will tell you everything you need to know about how to do it, and what you need and what to expect.

You might also try THIS thread to see other possible culprits of a high idle.

Mostly likely it's the intake gasket though.

I had the same problem it turned out to be carbon build up in the throttle body. I found the following youtube helpful.

Racing at 3,000 RPM is most likely the intake gasket has failed at the number one cylinder intake runner, You can verify this by simply spraying carb cleaner right where the intake manifold bolts to the cylinder head, The area of interest is located just below the power steering pump, If you spray that area and the idle changes or the engine stumbles the gasket is bad.
