1995 SL1
Default Re: SL1 Fuel economy??

We've got a '95 SL1 5 speed that we have owned since it was made. Even with an average of only maybe 15% highway miles, it's rare to see less than 30 MPG even with AC use and some stop and go crap in the mix. That includes a lot of short trips where the car doesn't even get up to full temp as well.

On the highway 40+ is the norm, and it will maintain that in the 70-75 mph range without problem.

So far the WORST mpg I have seen from the little 2002 SL 5spd I am using (kid bought it can't figure 5 spd out) is 36 mpg. Highest was just over 42. Compared to my 99 SL2 driven in same conditions worst (winter) 32 or so highest ever was about 41.
The SL 5spd seems to avg right about 38 right now (winter driving slogging 60+ miles each way to O'Hare Airport) when I have the SL2 same conditions it will avg about 34-35 same conditions.
Winter blend fuel sucks pondwater, as does winter period

98sl1, 250k miles, 5sp

70/30 highway/city

36 when average 70ish mph
42 when never going over 60
100 miles commute a day

That's with AC in summer and no weird gadgets installed.

If you live in the hills don't expect more then 32-34mpg out of that underpowered over-geared POS. With all my "gas eating" mods, the "gas eating" engine & the "gas eating" gearing in the hills with my SC2 I was getting 30-34mpg this past summer, just driving around never actually going on the highway.

In the 4-5 years a '97 SC1 was in my family it never saw more then 35mpg, and getting that high took 100% highway.

My '96 SL 5-speed gets 40-42 mostly highway during the summer. This winter because of lots of idle time, un-aerodynamic mods, and cold weather I'm down to 30-33.

As with most cars, it depends on how you drive. You could/should get anywhere from 28 to 43 MPG depending on where/how you drive, IMO.

Thanks guys! Now all I need to do is find a saturn! Im looking to spend no more than 500$ for one. I cant find any. Ive posted wanted ads everywhere in lexington ky. Im looking for one that needs work or that doesnt. But on the fuel mileage, my friend says that in his sl2 he used to get 40mpg no matter what he did. Pretty good imo.
